We Could Be Something

33: She Takes After Her Mother

Sparing a small yawn into his hand, Iker carefully nudged the door of Adriana’s hospital room open, allowing him to duck back inside quietly. It had been a little while, after the baby had arrived, a few hours had passed, and whilst Iker found himself more than slightly tired, he wasn’t prepared to head home, even if Adriana had insisted that he could, part him couldn’t will himself to be away from Adriana and the baby.

It still felt strange, the idea that Adriana had a daughter was one that was going to take a little getting used to, but Iker was confident that he would get used to it, even if it was a little odd for a while, he was confident that eventually he would grow used to the presence of the little girl.

“I thought you’d headed home”

Iker, who’d moved to place his empty coffee cup into the bin, startled a little at the sound of Adriana’s voice before he lifted his head, offering her a small smile. “I thought you were still asleep” he quipped.

Adriana, who was sat up on her bed, rolled her eyes a little before she shifted her hand, gently patting the side of her bed. “I thought you’d want to get some sleep” she noted as Iker padded towards her, sitting at her side “I woke you up pretty early” she added softly.

“You did” Iker confirmed “But I am OK, Addie” he added, his hand gently moving to take a hold of hers which fiddled nervously with the blankets which sat around her.

“Are you sure?” Adriana posed, peeking up at him softly.

Iker offered her a small look before he nodded his head. “I’m fine, Addie” he reassured her gently “And, if it’s OK with you, I’d like to stick around for a little while longer” he added, offering her a slightly teasing smile. It wasn’t the first time, since they’d arrived at the hospital, Adriana had offered him more than one opportunity to duck out, but despite her offers, Iker wanted to stick around, not wanting to leave Adriana and the baby alone.

Adriana rolled her eyes a little at the comment before the sound of the baby’s whimpers reached her ears, causing her to flick her attention towards the little girl who laid in the crib beside the bed, her blue eyes peeking around the room curiously.

“I think someone would like her mama’s attention” Iker quipped softly, his dark eyes peeking towards the baby.

Adriana smiled a little before she leant forwards, carefully wrapping the little girl up in her arms. “I still can’t quite get over how small she is” she fussed softly “I mean, I knew she would be, but she’s just so…so…”

“She’s stunning, Addie” Iker interrupted softly “She takes after her very beautiful madre” he added, a slightly smile pulling at the corner of his mouth.

Adriana’s cheeks warmed a little at his compliment before she shook her head, a small bashful smile on her face. “You’re very sweet, aren’t you?” she quipped, carefully checking that the baby was comfortable.

Iker spared a small bashful laugh before he leant forwards slightly, his dark eyes settling on the baby who sat in Adriana’s arms quietly. “I know that you’re not keen to disturb things right now” he noted gently “And I am not going to make you do anything that you don’t want to do, but in a while, you should probably contemplate making a few phone calls” he added, his tone soft.

He knew that she wanted to wait, after the baby had been born, Adriana had been clear that she wanted to take her time when it came to telling people about her daughter’s arrival, but Iker wanted to encourage her slightly, even if it was her choice, he wanted to encourage her to get it out of the way sooner rather than later.

Adriana, who’d been cooing softly to the baby, sighed a little before she nodded “I will do” she agreed softly “But for a little while longer, I just want it to be me, you, and her, do you think we can handle that?” she posed, peeking up at him gently.

Iker admired the soft look on her face before he nodded, a smile on his lips. “I think we can manage that” he noted softly “Have you decided on a name for her yet?” he added, his eyes peeking down at the little girl who sat in Adriana’s arms, her little feet kicking slightly.

“I think so” Adriana noted softly “I mean, for the last couple of months, I’ve had a couple of names in mind, but I think I’ve made my mind up” she added, her eyes fixed on the baby.

“Can I hear it?” Iker posed, his tone caught between soft and teasing.

Adriana quirked a small smile before she lifted her head slightly, peeking up at him. “This is Olivia” she breathed softly.

“Olivia?” Iker posed softly.

“It’s just a name I like” Adriana noted, shrugging slightly “Olivia Mia Montes” she added, her eyes flicking back towards Olivia who stirred slightly in her arms.

Iker mouthed the name to himself a couple of times before he grinned. “I like it” he enthused warmly.

Adriana quirked a small smile at his words before she shifted slightly, offering Olivia out to Iker slightly. “Do you want to hold her?” she posed tentatively.

Iker blinked a couple of times before he nodded his head. “If that’s Ok with you” he noted softly “I mean, I can wait…”

“Iker” Adriana interjected with a small laugh “I’d like you to hold her” she added, offering him a small reassuring smile.

Iker offered her a slightly dubious look before he carefully leant towards her, his arms carefully wrapping around Olivia’s tiny frame before he ducked back slightly, settling onto the bed beside Adriana.

Adriana watched him for a second before she carefully adjusted his arms, a smile playing on her lips. She knew that it was going to take a little getting used to, with Olivia around, things between her and Iker were bound to change a little, but in that moment, Adriana couldn’t help but smile. It was going to take time for things to settle down, once she shared the news of Olivia’s arrival, things were likely to get hectic, but for a little while, she merely wanted to enjoy having both Iker and Olivia to herself.
