We Could Be Something

35: At Least I Tried

Pulling her hair up into a ponytail, Adriana spared a small nervous sigh, her eyes fixed on the phone which sat on the end table. It had been a few days, after Olivia had arrived, Adriana had been keen to take a few days to get used to her being around, but she knew that she couldn’t hide her away forever, even if it did seem easier than telling other people, she knew that they had a right to know.

Offering her phone another look, she briefly contemplated waiting another day, before she shook her head, moving to dial Jonathan’s familiar number. She knew that things hadn’t changed, when she had last seen Jonathan, he had been clear that he still had very little interest in being involved in his daughter’s life, but still she wanted to call him, even if it was likely to be futile. She still wanted to let him know that Olivia had arrived.

Chewing on her lip, she listened to the dial tone for a few moments before it flicked over to his voicemail, something which made her scoff a little. “Hey, Jon” she breathed softly “I know that you’re still not interested in hearing from me, you’re still clearly avoiding my calls, but I thought you’d like to know that I had our baby a few days ago. We have a daughter, Jon, Olivia, and I thought…I thought maybe you’d want to know. I know that you’ve not changed your mind, you made very clear, but if…if you want to talk, I’d love that. She’s amazing, Jon” she mused softly before she moved to hang up the phone, settling it back on the end table.

She knew that it was unlikely, whenever she broached the topic of their baby, Jonathan’s reaction was the same, but still a small part of her hoped that he would change his mind, even if she didn’t want to repair their relationship, she wanted to try her hardest to ensure that Olivia had her father in her life.

Shaking her head slightly, she moved to sit down on the bed for a moment before the sound of someone clearing their throat reached her, causing her to look up towards the doorway where Iker stood, Olivia cuddled into his arms. “You OK?” he posed, a soft expression on his face.

Adriana eyed the look on his face for a moment before she nodded, a small sigh falling out of her mouth. “I got his voicemail” she noted softly “I’ve left a message, but I think we both know that I won’t be hearing from him” she added, a small frown playing at the corner of her mouth.

Iker shook his head a little before he moved to sit at her side, his hand gently squeezing hers. “It’s his loss, Addie” he mumbled softly “He’s the one who’s going to miss out on something pretty amazing” he added, his dark eyes peeking down towards Olivia who stirred a little in his arms.

He knew that Adriana wanted to try, regardless of her own relationship with Jonathan, she wanted to at least try and make sure that he was around for Olivia, but Iker couldn’t help but feel that it was a little futile. Jonathan had been clear, he had little interest in being around for his daughter, and Iker doubted that Adriana was going to change his mind, regardless of how hard she tried.

Adriana nodded. “I know” she mumbled softly “But I still want to try, even if it is a waste of time, I want to be able to say that I tried” she noted, peeking up at him softly.

Iker offered her a small reassuring smile before Olivia let out a small whimper, pulling his attention back to her. “I think someone might need her nappy changed” he noted with a small laugh.

Adriana shook her head a little before she carefully moved to wrap her arms around the baby, lifting her out of Iker’s arms. “Would you mind going to find her changing things?” she posed.

Iker shook his head slightly before he pushed himself to his feet, quietly moving to pad out of the room.

Adriana watched after him for a second before she flicked her attention down to Olivia, her fingertips gently smoothing out the little tufts of blonde hair which sat on top of her head. “I am sorry, little one” she murmured softly “I thought your papa would want to be around you and I am sorry that he is not, but whilst we don’t have your papa, we do have someone pretty amazing, don’t we?” she mused, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. It had been good, since Olivia had arrived, things between Adriana and Iker had been remarkably good, and whilst she knew that they had a few bumps ahead of them, she was more than glad that he was around, not only for her, but for Olivia too.

Shifting a little, she carefully adjusted Olivia against her before Iker padded back into the room, Olivia’s changing bag in his hand. “I’d stay to help, but I need to get to training” he noted softly.

“It’s fine” Adriana noted “I am sure that we can cope without you” she added teasingly.

Iker rolled his eyes playfully before he stepped towards the bed, pressing a brief kiss against the top of Olivia’s head. “Did you want me to come back here afterwards?” he posed, leaning back slightly.

“That’s up to you” Adriana noted “I am sure that you’d love a full night’s sleep” she added, offering him a small smile.

Iker returned her smile gently before he ducked in, pressing a soft kiss against her lips. “I’ll see you later, Addie” he noted softly before he moved to step away from the bed slightly.

Adriana, however, was slightly quicker and gripped onto his arm, pulling him into another kiss. “I love you” she mumbled gently as she pulled away.

Iker tilted his head slightly, caught off guard by the words, before he quirked a small smile. “I love you too” he enthused softly before he ducked out of the room.

Adriana watched after him for a second before she shook her head, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth. She knew that there were bumps ahead, when people started to visit, the chances were that her relationship with Iker would cause an issue, but still she was glad that he was around.
