We Could Be Something

99: You Weren’t There

Sparing a small look at the doorway which stood ahead of her, Adriana spared a small sigh, her stomach twisting at the prospect of spending time with her mother. It had been a long time, almost 3 years had passed since she and her mother had last spoken face to face, but she knew that she couldn’t duck out of it, even if part of her was tempted to, she knew that speaking to her mother was merely something that she had to do.

Allowing another soft sigh to fall out of her mouth, she quietly padded into the living room, her blue eyes settling on her mother who stood a little away from her, admiring the selection of photographs which lined a bookshelf. Pausing for a second, Adriana looked the older woman up and down for a couple of seconds before she cleared her throat, something which caused Clarissa to look up, her blue eyes settling on her daughter. “Adriana” she breathed softly “It’s been a while” she added.

Adriana, who stood tentatively in the door way, nodded her head stiffly, something which made Clarissa shake her head. “I’ve not come here to fight with you, Adriana” she noted softly “I know that I am not your favourite person, but I just wanted to talk to you. Do you think that that is something we can do?” she posed gently. She knew that Adriana would be a little reluctant, since things between Clarissa and Rafael had faltered, things between her and Adriana had been more than a little tense, but she wanted the opportunity to speak with her daughter, even if Adriana did make it a little tough.

Adriana offered her mother a slightly dubious look before she nodded her head, something which made Clarissa smile a little as she moved to take a seat on the couch.

Adriana watched her for a couple of seconds, her expression slightly hesitant, before she carefully sat down at her side, her fingers nervously tugging at the hem of her shirt nervously.

“I’ve just met your fiancé” Clarissa mused, breaking the tense silence which had settled around them “Though, I was a little surprised. When your aunt told me that you were getting married, I was expecting it to be to Jonathan. When you used to talk about him, you always sounded so smitten” she babbled softly, trying to start a conversation.

Adriana mulled her words over for a couple of seconds before shook her head. “That’s been over for a long time now” she noted, her voice firm “Iker, my fiancé, and I have been together for a little over 2 years now” she added.

“Your aunt was pretty vague when it came to details” Clarissa mused “I mean, she told me that you were planning on getting married in the near future, but she didn’t say much about your fiancé. He seems to pretty protective of you” she added gently.

Adriana allowed her words to linger for a couple of seconds before she shook her head. “You didn’t come here just to talk about Iker, mae” she muttered “So why don’t we skip over the small talk and get to what it is that you’re doing here” she added, her blue eyes narrowed on the older woman slightly.

Clarissa frowned a little at the expression which was on Adriana’s face before she nodded her head. “Ok” she mused softly “I know that I am not your favourite person. Since things between me and father broke up, I’ve done a terrible job when it comes to being a mother to you and Nico, but when I heard that you were getting married…I knew that I had to come and see you” she noted softly.

Adriana allowed a scoff to fall out of her mouth before she shook her head. “You want me to involve you when it comes to my wedding day?” she posed.

Clarissa shook her head. “No” she noted softly “I know that that isn’t going to happen, but I would like to be there. I know I’ve not been good enough, Adriana, but…”

“You don’t know the first thing about me, mae” Adriana interjected “You don’t know that I have two children, a son and a daughter. You don’t know that Jonathan left me when I told him I was pregnant, or that Iker…that he’s been the best thing that’s happen to me. Mae, you’ve never been there when I needed you” she added, her tone caught between hurt and irked.

“Adriana…”

“Mae, how can you expect me to want you to be there?” Adriana interjected.

“I can’t” Clarissa mused softly “I know that I can’t expect it, Adriana, but I would like you to at least consider it, even if you do decide that you don’t want me to be there. I’d like to know that you at least gave me some thought. I know that I have no right to expect anything from you, I’ve been awful when it comes to you and your brother, but I was there when Nico got married and I’d like to be there when you do, even if that is it. I don’t want to miss my little girl marrying the love of her life” she enthused, a soft smile playing at the corner of her mouth.

She knew that she had no right to expect anything from Adriana, from the moment that she had left Rafael, she had been a terrible mother towards Adriana and her brother, but she didn’t want to miss the moment that her little girl got married, even if she didn’t have anything else to do with her. She wanted to be there when Adriana and Iker made it up the aisle.

Adriana offered her a soft look before she shook her head. “I’ll think about it” she mumbled “But I am not making any promises, Mae. This is my wedding we are talking about, a day I want to be perfect, and the last thing I want is trouble” she added, her expression soft and shy.

Clarissa nodded her head. “I know” she agreed softly “And I won’t push the issue, but I am glad that you’re at least going to think about it” she added before she pushed herself to her feet, mumbling a soft goodbye before she ducked out of the room, making her way out of the house.

Adriana watched after her for a couple of seconds before she closed her eyes, letting out a small sigh.

“Are you OK?”

Adriana jumped a little at the sound of Iker’s voice before she blinked eyes open, peeking towards where he stood in the door way, Luca cuddled into his arms. “I think so” she murmured softly.

Iker shook his head a little before he stepped towards her, wrapping his spare arm around her waist. Offering her a small smile, he pressed a kiss against her head, mumbling softly to her. Adriana smiled a little at the romantic action before she cuddled into him slightly, glad for his comfort.
