A Life Like Other People's

Prologue

My name is Peru. Peru Urizarbarrena Gerrikagoitia, to be precise. Quite a mouthful, I know, but I’m not expecting you to learn it and you will not be tested on spelling at the end.

I am twenty years old. I am from a small town in the Basque mountains. I study telecommunications engineering in Bilbao. My girlfriend of three months gets annoyed at everything I do but we’re working through it.

You will be thankful to learn that this story is not about me.

This story is about my ama – my mother for those of you who do not speak Euskara. As all those stereotypes of Spanish boys and their mothers begin to swim through your mind, let me be the first to tell you that all of them are true. I love my ama. God help you if you speak ill of her in front of me.

Tomorrow I will give my ama away at her wedding. This role is usually fulfilled by the father of the bride, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the honour has fallen to me.

Tomorrow my ama will marry the woman of her dreams.

Things haven't always been this good, though.
