Momentary Peace

rage and peace

Threats and insults are thrown across the room in a heated rage. Neither can remember the reason why they started arguing, but neither wants to give up the fight. She can’t find one admirable quality about him, and he’s wondering why they ever married. Everything they do is wrong in the other’s eyes, and the bickering seems to have no end. Until the boy stumbles in with his teddy bear in one hand, the other rubbing his sleepy eyes. Suddenly the room that had been exploding with noise is silent, peaceful. The boy asks for mommy, claiming he can’t sleep. She glares at her husband, a warning that their spat isn’t over, and then leaves the room with her son. The boy has purposefully created momentary peace, and his heart breaks with the knowledge that it won’t last long.
