Memento Mori

Prologue

It all started right here, I think to myself as I stand in front of a dilapidated tombstone. The tombstone was cracked and falling apart. The wording was barely readable and the lack of weeds and grass show the neglected over the years and the evil that surrounds the spot.

This tombstone was older than the rest, that much you can tell. But what is hidden under the decay and neglect is another story. A story that explains why I find myself coming back here year and year on the same day. For over 100 years, this spot calls to me. No matter where I am in the world on October 13th, I find myself standing here waiting… Wait for the start of the proverbial cat and mouse game we play each year. Waiting to see the new body his soul took form of. Waiting to see how this year will end. Will it end with my death or his? For 100 years I managed to come out on top but that doesn’t mean he’s not due for a victory. In fact, I can feel it in my bones; this year will be different.

100 years is too long to be running. Sooner or later, I’ll have to pay my dues. And the sad thing? I honestly can’t wait for that day...
