Prologue

She always played life by the book.

She’d never arrive home later than midnight, she kept swear words out of my vocabulary and whenever she got angry at someone, she’d skip rope instead of allowing her tongue to poison their ears. She’d rather leave than stay and have an argument with someone—it was easier to let the fumes choke her than somebody else. She always thought about others and whether the good side of her face was facing them, or if her laughter was contagious enough. Sometimes she’d give opportunities to people who didn’t deserve them because of her silence, her acceptance. Countless times she stopped myself from loving wholeheartedly because people always ended up leaving, especially when you loved them the most.

But she chucked it all up when she realised that the people who don’t play by the rules are the ones who end up getting somewhere.
