When You Close Your Eyes

38: Shout It From The Rooftops

Twisting a strand of her blonde hair around her finger, Isabelle spared a look towards the screen of her laptop, a frustrated sound falling out of her mouth. She had been at it for a while, since she’d gotten back from work, she’d been in her study, attempting to finish her latest article, but still she couldn’t finish it, even if she had spent nearly 2 hours sat at her desk, she couldn’t seem to think of something else to write.

Letting her hair fall out of her grasp, she moved to type another sentence into the article before she re-read it, letting out a small huff in annoyance before she quietly moved to delete it.

“You know, I think you were in here when I left this morning”

Isabelle, who’d been quietly re-reading the sentence of her article, startled a little at the sound of Lionel’s voice before she lifted her head, peeking towards where he stood in the door way. “What are you doing back so soon?” she posed softly “I thought you weren’t going to be back until tomorrow morning?” she added, a small crease in her forehead.

Lionel admired the slightly confused look on her face before he quirked a small smile, moving to sit on the desk ahead of her. “We were going to get on a flight first thing in the morning, but the coaching staff changed it” he mused softly “We’ve got a big game in the week and they want to squeeze another training session in the morning so they flew us back tonight. You’re not happy to see me?” he posed, a boyish smile on his face.

It had been a while, after they’d told his family about the pregnancy, a couple of weeks had passed, but Lionel was pleased with the progress that he and Isabelle had made, even if there were still a few awkward silences or tense exchanges, he was pleased that things between the two of them appeared settled and calm.

Isabelle quirked a soft smile. “You know I am” she mused softly “I’m just a little surprised” she added gently.

Lionel nodded his head softly, allowing a silence to fall over them, before he flicked his attention towards her laptop. “Are you nearly done in here?” he posed softly.

Isabelle offered him a look before she shook her head. “I’m having a little trouble getting it finished” she noted softly “Why, what did you have in mind?” she added gently.

Lionel offered her a small smile before he shrugged. “I was thinking that we could order some food in and then settle in to watch a film, but if you’re busy, we can just take a rain check. I was simply hoping to spend a little time with my girlfriend” he mused warmly.

It had been a little while, after their anniversary, opportunities for the two of them to spend time together had been few and far between, and Lionel wanted to make the most of it, even if it was only dinner and a film, he wanted to spend a little time with Isabelle.

Isabelle offered him a soft look, briefly mulling his words over, before she quirked a small smile. “This article isn’t due for a couple of days” she mused softly.

“It isn’t?” Lionel posed, a slight smile on his face.

“It isn’t” Isabelle confirmed “So, why don’t you go and find us a couple of menus and I’ll go and find us something to watch?” she added, offering him a warm smile.

Lionel marveled at the smile on her face before he leant towards her, pressing a soft kiss against her lips. “That sounds like a plan” he mumbled softly.

“Are you sure that you don’t want anything else to eat?”

Isabelle, who’d been curled up on the couch, startled a little at the sound of Lionel’s voice before she lifted her head, offering him a small smile before she shook her head. It had been a good evening, after Lionel had arrived home from Barcelona’s game with Alaves, the two of them had spent the evening curled up in front of the television, and Isabelle had to admit that she had enjoyed herself, even if it had been quiet, she had simply enjoyed spending time curled up with her boyfriend.

“I’m Ok” she mused softly.

“Are you sure?” Lionel posed “Because you’re eating for two now and…”

“Leo” Isabelle interrupted softly “If I wanted something else, I’d tell you, but right now, I just want to sit here and curl up with you. Do you think that we can do that for a little while?” she posed, offering him an impish smile.

Lionel offered her a slightly dubious look, wordlessly ensuring that she was certain, before he nodded his head, moving to settle down beside her, allowing Isabelle to cuddle into his side. “How are you feeling today, Isa?” he murmured softly, his hand gently brushing over the front of the sweater of his that she wore.

Isabelle watched the movement of his hand for a couple of seconds before she shrugged. “As good as I have done for the last few weeks” she mused softly “I’m a little more tired, but the nausea is wearing off, something I am grateful for” she added, her fingers gently lacing through his.

Lionel nodded his head quietly, something which made Isabelle smile a little before she turned, pressing a kiss against his nose. “You know, I think it is very cute that you ask every day how I am feeling” she mused softly. It was a habit of his, whenever they were alone, he’d ask how she was feeling, and Isabelle found it sweet, even if it did have the potential to be overbearing. She was pleased by how excited he seemed to be about her pregnancy.

Lionel wrinkled his nose a little before he shook his head. “I like to ask” he noted softly “We’ve still got a way to go, but I want to make sure that everything is OK” he added, his fingertips gently rubbing against her stomach.

Isabelle watched his fingers for a couple of seconds before she quirked a soft smile. “Have you given any thought as to whether you want a boy or a girl?” she whispered, not wanting to disturb the quiet which had settled around them.

“I’d love a boy” Lionel mused softly “But as long as they’re happy and healthy, I don’t care. Besides, a girl who looks like her madre wouldn’t be a bad thing” he added, pressing brisk kiss against her shoulder “What about you?” he added gently.

“I’d love a boy too” Isabelle murmured softly.

Lionel smiled a little at her words before he ducked down, pressing another brisk kiss against her shoulder. “Isa, I want to think about announcing the pregnancy to the team” he mumbled quietly, not wanting to disturb the moment. He knew that it was a big step, telling his friends that they were expecting was a large step forwards, but he wanted to start thinking about it, even if it did lead to people making a fuss. He wanted everyone to know that Isabelle was carrying his baby.

Isabelle tilted her head. “You do?” she posed softly, turning to look up at him.

“I do” he confirmed softly “I mean, we don’t have to do it straight away, but it is something I’d like to do. It would mean a lot to me” he added softly.

Isabelle chewed on her lip for a couple of seconds, something which made Lionel smile a little before he ducked forwards, pressing a kiss against her cheek. “I am excited, Isa” he mumbled softly “I am excited by the idea that we’re about to become parents, and I’d like to share it. I am proud of this, Isa” he added warmly, his hand gently nudging against her bump once more.

Isabelle spared him another look, not missing the warmth in his expression, before she nodded her head. “Ok” she mused softly.

Lionel tilted his head. “Are you sure?” he posed.

Isabelle quirked a small smile before she nodded. “I know you” she mused softly “I’m pretty sure that since you came around to the idea, you’ve been itching to yell it from the rooftops, and if you want to tell your teammates, then I am Ok with that, but after that, I’d like to keep it to ourselves for as long as we can, do you think we can manage that?” she posed, offering him a soft look.

Lionel admired the look on her face before he nodded his head, offering her a warm smile. “I think we can manage that” he agreed softly.
