When You Close Your Eyes
72: The Day You Want
“Are you sure that you don’t mind looking after her?” Isabelle posed as she padded into the living room. It had been a couple of days, after her birthday dinner, she had spent a little time with her parents trying to make amends, but with the older couple due to head back to Bilbao that night, Isabelle had opted to invite her mother and sister out to lunch, wanting to make a start on wedding planning before her mother left.
It was still a little awkward, even despite the conversation that they had had to clear the air, things between her and her mother were still a little tense, but still Isabelle wanted to involve her, even if it was likely to be a little awkward from time to time. She knew how much it meant to her mother to be involved with the planning.
Lionel, who was sat on the floor playing with Isla, shook his head. “I think I’ll be fine” he mused “I have kind of looked after her by myself before, Isa, and I think I know what I am doing. I'm sure we'll be fine” he added, offering her a boyish smile.
Isabelle, who’d moved to collect her jacket, offered him a soft look before she nodded her head. “I shouldn’t be gone for too long” she noted softly “I figured that I could discuss the few plans we do have with my madre and Grace before my parents head back to Bilbao. It shouldn’t take too long” she added, wrapping her jacket around her shoulders.
It wasn’t something they’d talked about a lot, the idea of planning a second wedding was one that they’d only discussed briefly, but they had agreed on a couple of things, something which pleased Isabelle. She knew that it wasn’t a big deal, with them having eloped, the idea of a second wedding was largely for the benefit of those around them, but part of her was looking forwards to planning a wedding, even if she and Lionel had agreed that they only wanted something small. She was looking forwards to planning their day.
Lionel offered her a small look before he nodded his head. “Take all the time you need” he mused softly “I am sure that me and Lala will come up with something to do whilst you’re gone” he added, gently pressing a small kiss to the little girl’s head, causing her to let out a soft giggle.
Isabelle admired the two of them for a moment before she carefully ducked down beside them, pressing a soft kiss against Isla’s cheek before she pressed one against Lionel’s lips. “I’ll see you later?” she mumbled softly, her fingertips gently brushing through his dark hair.
Lionel nodded. “Of course” he noted “I live here” he added, sparing her an impish grin.
Isabelle rolled her eyes playfully before she leant into him, sneaking another quick kiss before she pushed herself up to her feet, moving to collect her bag before she ducked out of the room.
Lionel watched after her for a couple of seconds before he shook his head, a small smile playing at the corner of his mouth. He knew that it wasn’t the most important thing, with him and Isabelle already having gotten married, the idea of planning a wedding wasn’t the biggest deal, but he had to admit that he was pleased to see Isabelle excited about it, even if it was mostly for the benefit of those around them. He liked the idea that she was looking forwards to planning their big day.

“So, how much planning have you and Lionel done?” Francesca posed, sipping on her glass of water. It had been a little out of the blue, the invitation to have lunch with her two daughters had been a little sudden, but Francesca was pleased that Isabelle had invited her, even if things were still slightly off between them, she was excited by the idea of making a start on Isabelle and Lionel’s wedding plans.
Isabelle, who was perusing the menu, looked up at the sound of her mother’s voice before she shrugged. “We’ve talked about it a little” she noted softly “But, aside from the fact that we want something small and in the summer, we’ve not decided on too much” she added gently.
Francesca mulled her words over briefly before she nodded her head. “I am sure that we can come up with something” she noted softly “You’re looking at this summer?” she posed.
Isabelle nodded. “We don’t want to hang around” she mused softly “I mean, we want to plan a wonderful day, but we are already married and we don’t want to make too big a fuss. We just want something small and simple” she added, a soft smile playing at the corner of her mouth.
Grace, who was sat beside her older sister, admired the soft smile she wore before she shook her head, her elbow gently nudging Isabelle’s side. “You know, I still can’t quite believe that I have a brother-in-law” she quipped teasingly. It had been a surprise, when Francesca had called to tell her that Isabelle and Lionel had gotten married, it had caught Grace off guard, but she had to admit that she was thrilled for her big sister, even if it had caused a little tension within their family, she doubted that she had seen Isabelle happier.
Isabelle’s cheeks warmed a little before she shook her head. “It is still a little strange” she admitted softly “I mean, it was pretty sudden, but I am happy with the way things worked out. I know we’ve had our ups and downs, there was a period of time where I thought that we’d end up breaking up before we got engaged, but it worked out” she added, a warm smile on her lips. It still felt a strange, even despite the fact that they had been married for months, the idea still felt a little unfamiliar to Isabelle, but she was confident that she would get used to it, even if it did take some time.
Francesca smiled at her daughter’s words before she shifted her hand, offering Isabelle’s hand a gentle squeeze. “We’re pretty happy with how things have worked out for you too” she mused softly “And, whilst it is going to take some work, I am sure that we can plan a wonderful day for the two of you, the day you deserve” she added, gently squeezing Isabelle’s hand once more.
Isabelle spared a soft glance down towards their hands before she lifted her head, offering her mother a soft smile. She knew that it was going to take some work, with her and Lionel not wanting to hang around, there was only a small amount of time to plan, but she was looking forwards to it, even if she had already had her wedding day, a small part of her couldn’t want to do it in front of their friends and family.
