When You Close Your Eyes

96: Now?

Resting her head back against the frame of the chair that she sat in, Isabelle let out a soft sigh, her hand gently rubbing at her bump. It had been a while, after her contractions had started, more than a couple of hours had passed, but still things didn’t appear to be moving quickly, something which was starting to play on Isabelle’s nerves. She knew that it had the potential to be a slow process, when she had given birth to Isla, she had been labour for a while, but still a part of her wanted the process to speed up slightly, even if she was slightly apprehensive, she simply wanted her little girl to arrive sooner rather than later.

Letting a small sigh fall out of her mouth, she closed her eyes for a couple of seconds before the sound of someone clearing their throat reached her ears, causing her to lift her head, peeking over the top of the chair towards Lionel who stood in the nursery door, a familiar sympathetic smile on his face. “I thought you were busy downstairs” she mumbled, shifting in her seat in an attempt to get a little more comfortable.

“I was” Lionel noted “But I figured I’d come and check on you. You’ve been up here for almost an hour and I thought I’d see how you’re doing” he added, sitting down on the ground beside Isla’s crib. He knew that there was very little he could do, with Isabelle’s labour progressing slowly, there was very little he could do for her, but he wanted to offer her a little comfort, even if he couldn’t move things along for her. He wanted to ensure that she was as relaxed and as comfortable as she could be.

Isabelle watched as he sat down before she shook her head. “I’m alright” she mumbled softly “I mean, I’d love it if things were moving along a little quicker, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. Our little girl seems intent on taking her time” she added, a faint smile passing over her face.

Lionel spared her a slightly dubious look, asking if she was sure, before he nodded his head, gently knotting their fingers together. “I am sure she’ll come along soon” he noted softly, squeezing her hand lightly.

“I hope so” Isabelle mused softly.

Lionel moved to press a soft kiss against her hand before he carefully pulled himself back up to his feet, his dark eyes flashing towards the door as Marco tapped his hand against it. “Marco?” he posed.

“Grace and Samuel are about to leave” the older man noted “They’re due to visit his parents and I thought you’d want to come and say goodbye” he added.

“Of course, Papa” Isabelle mused softly “We’ll be right with you” she added.

Marco nodded his head before he ducked out of the room, allowing Lionel to flick his attention back towards Isabelle. “Are you sure that you want to go downstairs?” he posed softly.

Isabelle smiled a little at his fussing before she nodded her head, something which caused him to step towards her, gently helping her back to her feet. Isabelle followed his movements carefully before she felt a fluid sensation rush down her legs, causing a small sound of surprise to fall out of her mouth.

Lionel, who’d been focused on helping her up, startled at the sound before he tilted his head. “Isabelle?” he pressed.

Isabelle blinked a couple of times before she lifted her head, her blue eyes mirroring his darker ones. “We…we’re going to need to get the bags” she babbled softly.

Lionel allowed her words to hang around them for a couple of seconds before he swallowed slightly. “Now?” he squeaked.

Isabelle spared him a shy smile before she nodded her head. “My waters have just broken” she confirmed softly.

Lionel blinked a couple of times, allowing her words to settle in, before he leant into her, pressing a warm kiss against her lips. Isabelle stumbled slightly, surprised by the contact, before she leant into it, enjoying the soft kiss fleetingly before he ducked back, flashing her an impish grin. “We’re having a baby” he mumbled softly.

Isabelle giggled a little before she gently nudged his shoulder, something which encouraged him to pull away from her and move to collect the two bags which had been neatly stowed beside the door of the nursery before he stepped back towards her, knotting their fingers together as he offered her hand a comforting squeeze.

“How is Isla?”

Lionel, who’d just stepped back into Isabelle’s private room, quirked a small smile at her question before he stepped a little further into the room, taking a seat beside her bed. It had been a little while, after Isabelle’s waters had broken, they’d headed straight for the hospital, and Lionel was pleased with how things seemed to be progressing, even if the little girl hadn’t arrived. He was sure that it wouldn’t be much longer before she did.

“She’s fine” he replied softly “She was a little fussy when she woke up from her nap and we weren’t there, but your madre said that she’s more than happy now. She was awake and playing with her toys when I spoke to your papa” he added softly.

Isabelle nodded her head gently, something which caused Lionel to lean over, pressing a soft kiss against her head. “How are you doing?” he posed quietly.

“I’m OK” Isabelle replied softly “I’m tired, and I’d like this to be over with, but I am doing alright. Carla said that I was at 8 centimetres when she came by last so it shouldn’t be too much longer before she gets here” she added, offering him a light smile before she moved to grip onto his hand, squeezing it as another contraction passed.

“I’ve been thinking” Lionel mused as the contraction passed.

Isabelle tilted her head. “What about?” she posed softly.

“Names” Lionel replied “I mean, we’ve had a couple in mind since we found that she was a girl, but I thought we could choose one” he added gently. It had taken them a while, finding names that they both liked had proved a difficult task, but they’d managed to narrow it down to a couple that they were both fond of.

“I liked them both” Isabelle mused softly “And, seeing as I choose Isla’s name, I think it is probably your turn. I’ll be happy with either of them” she added, offering him an encouraging smile.

Lionel spared her a look, asking if she was sure, before he nodded his head. Pausing for a second, he mulled the two names over in his head before he quirked a small smile. “Leia” he breathed softly.

“Leia?” Isabelle posed softly.

Lionel nodded his head. “Leia Messi Pereira” he enthused softly.

Isabelle mouthed the name to herself a couple of times before a sharp squeak fell out of her mouth, something which caused Lionel to push himself up to his feet. “I’ll go and get Carla” he noted before he sped out of the room.

Isabelle watched him go before she rested back into the bed, hoping that it wouldn’t be too much longer before the little girl arrived.

Gently smoothing out the tufts of blonde hair which sat on the top of the baby’s head, Lionel shook his head, his face lit with a smile which he hadn’t been able to stifle in the hour that had passed since the little girl had arrived. It had taken a while, after Isabelle had been moved into the delivery room, a further hour had passed before Leia had arrived, but Lionel had no doubt that she was worth it. She was tiny, smaller than he remembered Isla having been, but he was in awe of her and he doubted that it was something which was going to pass quickly.

Shifting slightly in his seat, he leant back a little before he rested Leia against his chest, something which caused the newborn to let out a soft whimper before she settled down again, her soft blue eyes closing.

“You know you’re doomed right?”

Lionel, who’d been watching Leia, lifted his head at the sound of Isabelle’s voice, offering her a slightly confused look.

“I mean, Isla’s already got you wrapped around her little finger, and this one too…I don’t how you’re going to cope” she added, offering him an impish grin.

Lionel rolled his eyes playfully before he carefully pushed himself up to his feet, moving to settle down on the side of the bed. Isabelle made a little room for him beside her before she gently rested her head on his shoulder, her blue eyes peeking down towards Leia who let out a soft whine, not liking being moved. Quirking a small smile, Isabelle gently adjusted the pink sleepsuit that Leia wore before she shook her head. “She’s something, isn’t she?” she mumbled, not wanting to disturb the quiet which had settled around them.

“She is” Lionel confirmed “We made another beautiful little girl” he added, offering her a small smile.

Isabelle nodded her head in agreement before she carefully leant down, pressing a soft kiss against the top of Leia’s head before a small yawn fell out of her mouth, something which made Lionel shake his head. “You’ve earned a long sleep, nena” he mumbled softly.

“I could do with a nap” Isabelle replied softly “Are you sure that you don’t mind watching her?” she added.

“Of course I am” Lionel noted “You should get some sleep. I am sure that me and Leia will be fine” he added, shuffling off of the bed.

Isabelle offered him a look, wordlessly asking if he was sure, before she moved to curl up against her pillow, quietly falling asleep.

Lionel watched her for a couple of second before he ducked down, pressing a kiss against her head, wordlessly thanking her for going through the labour which had bought their daughter into the world.
