The Unforgivable War

Problems Arise

As William and Vincent soon finished dining, they settled out to the well-known plantation in search of fighters for this upcoming war. It was on the brink of unleashing it’s wrath, so they couldn’t waste anymore time if they really wanted to win this war. As they neared the plantation, Vincent couldn’t help but notice how gray the sky had looked. It looked as if the sky was about throw a storm at them at any moment. He hoped Isie was safe.

They arrived at the plantation, and soon were entering the empty fields. Was no one working today? Maybe they had given out a warning of a storm coming that Vincent did not hear of. Surely that had to be the reason why the fields were so… lifeless. They walked along the path, and soon arrived to the main building. A gust of cold air slapped him in the face as he walked in the building. It felt as if death had been among them, caressing all the life that was in the room at the time, just waiting for it to give death a chance to snap it away.

“Ok, since we’re the only ones on the top floor we can take advantage of what’s here. First we need to make count of those who we change. We need to calculate their health status and see if they are cut out for being one of us. Ok, I think that’s all we need for now. Shall we make our way downstairs?”

“There is a downstairs? When was this established William?” He was taken aback at the thought of having a basement on a plantation. Then again, it could have made sense. The basement could have been a holding chamber for all the grapes they had picked. Maybe that’s where they made the wine as well. Soon he calmed himself down, knowing that the basement couldn’t have been anything more than that. Unfortunately, he was wrong…very wrong.

As they stepped on each stair, each seemed to creak with the weight upon them. Yet, it seemed like a scream, every step led you closer to a secret forsaken hell. As they finally stepped on the basement floor, automatically Vincent began to feel a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach. Whether it be because he was just shot there, or he really did have a bad feeling, he knew that he didn’t want to be here.

The basement was beyond dark, only for a few candles scattered upon tables that lay neatly against the wall. It looked like a torture chamber, reserved for those who only committed the highest of sins. William led him through the basement, making sure not to run into any chairs or equipment of some sort. Finally, they had arrived to a brown, decaying door that looked as if it was about to fall from the hinges at any moment. If he listened enough, he was sure he heard screams from within. Was it his mind playing evil tricks with him? It had to be, why would people be screaming as if someone was torturing them? It didn’t seem likely.

“Are you ready Vincent?”

“W-What exactly is in there William? What are you hiding?” ,he sputtered the words out, for every limb in him began to shake out of nervousness. This could be what William was trying to hide all this time. This could be why he, as well as the workers, acted so strangely when they stepped foot on this plantation.

“I have something to tell you Vincent. Please believe me when I do. You have to because if you aren’t careful, you could end up as one of them.”
Confused, Vincent was ready to retort his statement when William had hushed him.

“Please Vincent, not now, especially when we are about to enter the most catastrophic war we will ever face!” He let out sigh, clearly appearing agitated with the situation.

“Vincent, this isn’t just a plantation. This is also an experimental site. We’ve been searching for the immortals and looking in their blood. We’ve wanted to find out what makes them so powerful, so unique, and so…beautiful. We were hoping to find the answers before something like this happened. We wanted to see if we could give it the workers, so as to make them stronger and improve our business. We would be rich in the wine industry, and Italy would be renowned for it if were to happen! Unfortunately, the peace treaty was broken before we could find it, and now we have to concentrate on this above all. Vincent…if Transylvania finds out that we’ve been experimenting on their guards, we would face a death so great…well you know the rest.”

He was shocked at what he had just heard. All along they were testing on these creatures, right beneath his feet, and he never noticed once. Was this the reason why everyone was so shaken as they worked in the fields? Did they participate in these sickly fiascos?

“William, I thought you said Thomas was responsible for killing them? Is this why everyone on the fields are so distressed? Is this your secret William? Why didn’t you tell me from the start?”

Astonished at his words, William was dumbfounded. William didn’t realize that he was keeping a close watch on things above. William didn’t realize that he knew something evil was happening. He finally shook his head to fend off all his mixed emotions.

“Vincent, I am deeply sorry for not telling you. I just didn’t think you were ready. You see, Thomas was responsible for some of those killings, but not all of them. Some of them were by the workers here, the changed ones though. It was a crucial trip, but each time they came back with what they were sent to fetch. I know you may think it is somewhat disturbing, but you have to see through my eyes Vincent. Just think, if the workers here had only a drop of that blood, imagine how great we would be? Please Vincent, you are my closest friend, a brother really. Don’t be angry with me.”

He couldn’t but feel sorry for William. He was put through so much. He had no family, and really he was all William ever had. They were instant friends when they met that day at William’s wife’s funeral, along with his children. A miserable time for him, but yet he was able to make it better. They’ve been there for each other ever since. He couldn’t leave William, now that he was in desperate need of his help. He had to face the truth, and help William. After all, it was the least he could do for everything that William had given him.

He stood there for a few moments really, and slowly nodded his head in response. William gave him a bright smile that seemed to shine half of the room with his gleaming white teeth. Then he knocked three times in synchronization and the door was opened. Soon, his ears were ringing from the screams that seemed to come from each corner of the room. Of course, this room was just as dark from the room in which they left. Hardly any candles, yet still visible to see the pathway ahead. William led the way once again, showing Vincent the experimental room.

They soon emerged into a dull hallway with many doors on either side that seemed to amplify the screams. It was long and narrow, hardly a hallway at all! William sauntered through the hall, as he followed closely behind, trying to block out the screams that escaped from each door. They had passed so many doors, it all seemed nauseating really. Finally, William came to an abrupt stop to a door on his right. A little tag on the door displayed the words “Experimental – 48”. William had finally managed to take out a key from his pants pocket and unlock the door. Soon the door swayed open only to reveal a creature sitting atop a table, tied down to it. Tools surrounding him, blood had managed to spatter everywhere, and it seemed to ripple with each scream that had escaped from this immortal.
