Angels & Demons

EIGHT || DANGER

Quinn woke up the next morning and was only a little bit surprised when J was no longer in bed with her. She lay in bed for a long time after waking up, thinking about the events of the night before. They hadn't had sex, like she'd expected that they probably would. She'd been pretty sure that they both wanted to, but for some reason they just didn't. They'd kissed a lot and she'd fallen asleep in his arms and that had been it.

She couldn't stop thinking about it for some reason. He was the Joker, after all; the man who was notorious for having women on his arm and in his bed. She knew it was ridiculously screwed up, but she couldn't help but wonder why he didn't seem to be overly interested in her. The more time she spent with him, the more she thought she might be falling in love with him. She'd wondered if her feelings were retaliated, but she couldn't help but feeling like maybe they weren't. It made her feel pathetic and ridiculous but she couldn't help but be a little sad about it.

When she finally forced herself out of bed and wandered downstairs, J was nowhere to be found. She made herself some food and ate alone at the kitchen island. It wasn't until she was done eating that she realized how strangely quiet the house was. Usually even if J wasn't there, someone was. There were almost always at least a few of his henchmen crawling around, but as she sat there at the island with her empty breakfast plate, it struck her that the house was too quiet.

She ventured up the main staircase of the house curiously, looking around quietly. She'd never actually been to the second floor of the house somehow. There were a handful of bedrooms with random things strewn about them and no beds, there were two rooms that had thick padlocks on the doors, a giant bathroom, and then at the end of the hall was what definitely had to be J's bedroom. She walked in quickly, looking around to make sure no one was watching her. For some reason, it felt oddly wrong but also oddly thrilling to be going into his room without his knowledge.

Inside, it looked exactly like she would have pictured it. There were various weapons attached to hooks covering most of the wall space, and the room was mostly empty other than a giant bed right in the middle of it. She moved to it and ran her fingers down the deep purple silk sheets slowly.

Suddenly, there was a noise from downstairs and a myriad of loud voices flooded the house. As Quinn started to move quickly out of the room, J was calling her name from downstairs, his voice sounding urgent. She moved down the hall and descended the stairs quickly, doing her best to ignore his inquisitive stare as he watched her come downstairs.

"What's up?" she asked him, trying to sound casual. He shook his head, as if trying to clear it before his eyes focused on her fully.

"We're in danger. We need to go," he said shortly, and she instantly started shaking her head.

"We need to... what?" she asked, confused.

"Go," he said again, giving her an annoyed look. "Pack a bag. Now," he yelled a moment later when she still hadn't moved. Startled, she headed into the kitchen to go up to her apartment and do what he'd asked.

She made her way back downstairs a while later and J was waiting impatiently for her near the front door.

"Took you long enough, dammit," he said, looking down at the chunky watch on his arm.

"Screw you," she said quietly. He gave her a death glare but didn't respond out loud, surprising her. Normally, he would have had some sort of snappy comeback. It was only then that she became faintly frightened of whatever danger he'd mentioned before.

He ushered her out the back door of the house and into his car quickly. As they moved out onto the road, she noticed that they were following a large black SUV. There was a very similar one behind them, and there wasn't a doubt in her mind that both of them were filled to the brim with his henchmen. Glancing at J sitting in the driver's seat beside her, she wished she could read his mind for the millionth time since she'd met him.

"J, what's going on?" she asked him, not surprised at all when he barely even looked at her.

"I told you. We're in danger," he said quietly, not paying real attention to her at all.

"That's... descriptive," she mumbled, annoyed.

"Your little friend from last night was involved with some very dangerous people, and now they want nothing more than vengeance for his death. The leader of the mafia he was involved with called me and requested a meeting this morning. Turns out the meeting was just him letting me know that he was going to kill you slowly and painfully with me watching. Happy?" he rattled off, giving her a look that she couldn't quite read when he was done.

"Happy," she whispered, reaching across his lap and taking his hand. She was surprised when he interlaced their fingers together and raised her hand to his mouth so that he could kiss it.
