The Reckless and the Brave

"Ally," she mumbled again, trying her best to stop herself from kissing him more. She had to admit how much she'd missed his always-soft lips. It was extremely hard for her to force herself to back away from him, but she managed it eventually. He looked at her silently, big brown eyes studying her intently.

"We... we have to talk for real," she told him, and he nodded.

"I know. I just couldn't go another second without feeling your lips against mine," he said, his words making her heart feel like it was flipping over in her chest.

Just as she was about to say something else, Jack ran up the stairs of the bus calling both of their names.

"Oh..." he trailed off when he saw the two of them sitting there, their bodies still pressed way too close together. Without really meaning to, Lily shot backwards to put a safe distance between them.

"It's not-," Alex started, but Jack waved his arm at him.

"You don't owe me an explanation. Lil, you do have a show in twenty minutes though, so if you're done sucking face or whatever other gross shit you guys were doing, it's probably time for you to go get ready," Jack told her, winking and reaching for her. She stood, straightening her clothes and following her best friend off the bus. Just before she was out of sight, she turned and shot one more look at Alex. He mouthed something at her that she couldn't quite make out. She followed Jack to the stage, saying hello to various band members and fans as they went.

"Is it bad that after all the time I've been doing this, I'm still fucking terrified of this shit?" Lily asked Jack, motioning to the stage and the fans that were already gathered around it.

"I'd be concerned if you weren't shitting yourself," Jack assured her, kissing her on the forehead and giving her a solid push toward the stage.

An hour later, the best show of Lily's life was over and she was feeling fantastic. There had been so many fans that were so excited to see her band, and when she'd looked out she'd seen so many of them mouthing her lyrics. Her head was still swimming with adrenaline as she was lead to the press tent to sit for a few interviews.

As she was on her way, someone came up behind her and grabbed her and spun her around in a hug. When they sat her back down on the ground, she realized it was Alex and was surprised. She'd presumed that it was going to be Jack. Her eyes grew wide and she looked around, wondering if anyone had seen. It wasn't that she didn't want to be seen with him; mostly she just didn't want the wrong person to see and get the wrong idea.

Alex, however, didn't seem to detect her hesitancy at all. "That was fucking amazing, Lil! You killed it!" he said excitedly, and she couldn't help but giggle at him. He'd always been so adorable when he was excited.

"Thanks, Ally," she said, smiling widely at him. As he walked with her toward the tent, it took everything inside her to hold herself back from grabbing his hand and interlacing their fingers. It had been a long time since she'd been to Warped Tour, but the last time she'd been there riding along with All Time Low while they played the tour. As she walked through the tents and the sea of people with Alex at her side, she couldn't help but let all those memories flood back.

"Al, do you remember the last time we were here?" she asked him, and he thought about it a moment.

"Yeah. 2013. The summer before we broke up. Also the summer that you were sure I was cheating on you when I wasn't," he said, just a tinge of bitterness lacing his tone. She nodding slowly, having forgotten about that last part.

"Shit," she mumbled, her entire mood automatically falling a little. When she looked up at Alex again, she could see that the same thing had happened to him.

"What the hell happened to us, Lil?" he asked her a moment later, and she shrugged lightly.

"Life," she said as they arrived at the entrance of the press tent. "Life happened, Ally," she said quietly, looking at him solemnly. He nodded shortly, giving her a quick hug before turning around and disappearing into the mess of people.
