Somebody Like Me

Seventeen: It’s Not Every Day

Checking her reflection in her mirror, Cassie spared a small nervous sigh, trying to shift the knot of nerves which twisted uncomfortably in her stomach at the thought of being introduced to Sergio’s parents.

She knew that there was no avoiding it, with her pregnancy progressing quickly, it was only a matter of time before her bump became too obvious to hide, but a small part of her wanted to avoid it for a little longer, even if it was slightly selfish given that they’d already visited her father, a small part of her wanted to put off meeting his parents for as long as she could.

Gently brushing her fingers back through her dark, she spared her reflection another slightly nervous look before she gently nudged the car door open, moving to push herself up to her feet before she wrapped her coat around her shoulders. Ensuring that her small bump was well hidden by the material of her sweater and coat, she spared a soft glance towards the door which stood a little away from her before she shook her head, her mind briefly contemplating the idea of climbing back into the car and driving away.

Chewing on her lip, she considered the idea of ducking away for a few moments before she shook her head, willing herself up towards the door. Swallowing a little, she tapped her hand against it before she stepped back slightly, watching as Sergio pulled it open, a familiar warm grin perched on his face. “You made it” he mused, his voice caught between warm and surprised.

Cassie offered him a look before she nodded her head. “I said that I would” she mused “I mean, I more than once thought about not coming, but here I am” she babbled nervously, her cheeks turning a soft shade of pink.

Sergio smiled a little at her nerves in her voice before he gently lifted his hand, carefully brushing a loose wave of her dark hair off of her face before he leant in, sneaking a quick kiss. “You’re going to be fine” he mumbled softly.

“You can’t guarantee that” Cassie retorted, a slight frown on her face.

Sergio rolled his eyes playfully before he shook his head. “It is going to be a surprise” he agreed softly “I mean, they don’t even know that I am dating you, let alone that we’re going to have a baby in a few months, but I am sure that they’ll be fine with you, Cass, even if it does take some time for the surprise to wear off. It’s pretty hard to not like you” he enthused softly. She had every right to be nervous, his parents didn’t even know that he had a girlfriend, let alone that she was pregnant, but still Sergio wanted to calm her down slightly, not wanting her to work herself up.

Cassie spared him a small glare, something which made Sergio laugh a little before he pressed a soft kiss against her forehead. “You’ll be fine, nena” he mumbled softly.

Cassie cuddled into his body slightly, enjoying the comfortable embrace for a couple of seconds before the sound of someone clearing their throat filled the air, causing her to flinch slightly before she ducked back, her green eyes landing on an older woman who stood in the doorway, a curious expression filling her features. “Sergio?” she posed.

Sergio spared Cassie a slightly apologetic look before he turned, offering a soft smile towards his mother. “Can I help you, mama?” he posed.

“I was just wondering where you’d gotten to” Paqui replied “But I can see now that you’re busy. Are you going to introduce us?” she added, her eyes settling on Cassie who’d moved to hide a little behind Sergio.

Sergio offered his mother a slight look, wordlessly asking her to be polite, before he nodded his head. “Of course” he mused softly “Mama, this is Cassie, my girlfriend” he enthused warmly, a brief smile appearing at the corner of his mouth. It still felt a little odd, the idea that Cassie was his girlfriend, but he was growing to like the word. It seemed to be a good fit for her.

Paqui noticed the smile which formed at the corner of his mouth before she flicked her attention towards Cassie, offering her a soft smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Cassie” she greeted softly “I’m Paqui, Sergio’s madre” she added, gently offering her hand out towards the younger woman.

Cassie spared her a slightly nervy glance before she stepped forwards, lightly shaking the older woman’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you too” she mused softly.

Paqui offered her a warm smile before she stepped out of the door way, gesturing for Cassie to walk past her. “I’ve just finished making dinner” she mused softly “You should come and have dinner with us. It might not be a lot, Sergio refrained from mentioning that you were coming, but I am sure that we can make it stretch” she added, offering a playful look towards her son who playfully rolled his eyes in return.

Cassie watched the small interaction between the two of them before she quirked a small smile. “You’d not mind me staying?” she posed, her voice soft and tentative.

Paqui spared the younger woman a soft look before she shook her head. “Of course we wouldn’t” she enthused warmly “It’s not every day that Sergio invites his girlfriend around to meet me and his papa and we’re not likely to let the chance go to waste. You should come through, I am sure that my husband would love to meet you too” she enthused brightly before she ducked out of the hall, padding back towards the kitchen.

Cassie watched after her for a brief moment before she flicked her eyes towards Sergio, something which caused the defender to smile a little before he took a couple of steps towards her, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead before he offered her a soft squeeze. He knew that she was worried, from the moment that she had stepped into the house she had looked more than slightly nervous, but he wanted to encourage her to relax a little, confident that his mother and father would warm to her quickly. It was bound to be a shock, the idea that his girlfriend was already pregnant was bound to knock them for six, but he was sure that they’d warm to it, even if it did take a little digesting, he was sure that they’d love both Cassie and peanut.

“Come on” he mumbled after a couple of seconds of quiet “We can eat dinner and then think about telling them about…you know” he added, his dark eyes briefly glancing down towards the front of coat.

Cassie spared him a hesitant look, something which caused Sergio to press another kiss against her forehead, insisting without words that things would work out.
