Somebody Like Me

Thirty Four: I Was Trying To Be Romantic

Rubbing the bridge of her nose, Cassie let out a small sigh, her green eyes scanning the newly finished article which filled the screen of the laptop which stood on the desk ahead of her. It had been a long morning, with the baby being particularly active, she had had a problem when it came to focusing on the article which she had been keen to finish, and she was pleased that it was finished with, even if it had taken a little longer than usual, she was glad that she had gotten it done. Briefly scanning over the article once more, she moved to send it to her editor before she closed the laptop down.

“You’re done for the day, right?”

Cassie, who’d moved to shuffle her laptop into her bag, jumped a little at the sound of Sergio’s voice before she turned around slightly, a warm smile forming on her face at the sight of him rested against the frame of her office door.

It had been a little while, after they’d started work on the nursery in her apartment, a little over a week had passed, and Cassie was still pleased with how things seemed between them. She had been worried, when she’d first suggested that they make their relationship slightly more serious, she had been a little concerned that things would stumble quickly, but she was pleased that they hadn’t, even if they were still a little awkward from time to time. She more than liked the way things were between her and Sergio.

“I’ve just finished off that article that I was working on” Cassie mused softly “But I think I have a more pressing question. What are you doing here? I mean, I’m more than happy to see you, but I thought you had plans?” she babbled as she stepped towards him, greeting him with a brisk kiss.

Sergio smiled at the soft contact before he gently wrapped his arms around her waist, offering her a small shrug. “I did have plans” he quipped “I spent the morning with Fernando and Iker making a start on peanut’s nursery at my place, but I figured I could drop by and surprise you by taking you out to dinner. It’s been a while since we went out to dinner just the two of us” he added, sneaking another soft kiss.

Cassie’s cheeks warmed a little at the soft kiss before she gently ducked back, a soft smile pulling at her lips. “You came all the way down here to take me to dinner?” she posed as she cocked an eyebrow, her expression warm and amused.

Sergio rolled his eyes playfully before he carefully ducked forwards, resting his forehead against hers. “I was trying to be romantic” he quipped softly “I mean, I know peanut’s not due for a little while yet, but I kind of want to make the most of this time. It won’t be too long before we’re doing night feeds and changing nappies all of the time” he added gently, a small smile playing on his lips.

He knew that they still had a while to go, Cassie’s due was still a couple of months away, but he wanted to make the most of the time they had together before the baby arrived, wanting to make sure that things between the two of them were settled and comfortable before the little boy put in his first appearance.

Cassie mulled his words over for a couple of moments before she nodded her head gently, sparing him another soft smile. “I think that dinner sounds lovely, Sese” she mused softly “And I think that you’re pretty adorable for thinking of it” she added, poking his side playfully.

Sergio rolled his eyes slightly before he caught her hand, gently pulling it against his lips. “Aren’t you lucky to have such an adorable boyfriend?” he teased impishly, something which caused Cassie to giggle softly before she shook her head, mumbling something about him being an idiot before she gently knotted their fingers together, leading him out of her office.

“So, are you looking forwards to getting back into pre-season yet?” Cassie posed as she sipped on her glass of orange juice, her green eyes peeking across the table towards Sergio who was sat opposite her, his dark eyes scanning over the dessert menu. It had been a nice night, even despite Sergio’s showing up unannounced at her office, Cassie had enjoyed spending the evening with him, and she was pleased that he’d done it, even if they’d simply headed out to the closest restaurant that they could find. She had enjoyed heading out on a date with her boyfriend.

Sergio lifted an eyebrow. “You’re not enjoying having me to yourself more often?” he quipped, a playful pout on his face.

Cassie rolled her eyes a little before she shook her head, something which made Sergio smile a little before he shrugged. “I do miss it” he quipped “But I also enjoy having some time off. It’s been a good opportunity to start getting things ready for peanut” he added, his eyes briefly peeking down towards her bump.

Cassie followed the line of his stare before she quirked a small smile, not missing the warm expression which had appeared on his face. It was a habit of his, since her bump had started to develop, Sergio had taken to fussing over it every opportunity that he got, and Cassie had to admit that she found it adorable. Part of her couldn’t wait to see his face the moment that their baby was placed into his arms for the first time.

Admiring the soft look on his face, she gently moved her hand across the table before she knotted their fingers together, squeezing his hand softly. Sergio, who’d been quietly admiring her bump, startled a little at the contact before he gently lifted her hand, pressing a soft kiss against the warm skin. “You know, I already can’t wait to meet him” he mumbled softly “I mean, I know that he came along as a bit of a surprise, but I am so excited about him arriving, Cass” he added, gently kissing her hand once more.

Cassie watched his movements for a second before she nodded softly. “I know you are” she mused softly “I mean, I can see it all over your face whenever we talk about him” she added warmly.

Sergio spared a soft bashful laugh before he shook his head, something which caused Cassie to push herself out of her seat slightly, pressing a gentle kiss against his cheek. “I can’t wait either” she murmured “I mean, I’m more worried than you are, but I am still very excited. We’re going to be parents, Sese” she fussed softly.

Sergio’s face brightened with a smile at her words before he gently squeezed her hand, wordlessly offering her a little reassurance. He knew that she was worried, from time to time, she looked more than a little concerned about the impending arrival of their baby, but Sergio was confident that they’d cope, even if it did take a period of adaptation. He was sure that they’d figured it out eventually.

Cassie shook her head softly before she pressed another kiss against his cheek. “I am just going to pop to the bathroom” she mused softly “I’ll be right back” she added before she pushed herself away from him, padding across the restaurant.

Sergio watched her for a couple of seconds, resting back into his seat slightly, before he shook his head, a grin seemingly immovable on his face. He knew that it hadn’t been long, he and Cassie had only been together for a matter of months, but he had to admit that a small part of him was looking ahead, even if Cassie was keen to take her time when it came to their relationship, a small part of him couldn’t getting slightly carried away. Shaking his head once more, he moved to pull his wallet out of his jacket before the sound of footsteps reached his ears, causing him to breathe out a small laugh. “You forget something?” he quipped impishly without looking up.

“Hola, Sergio”

Sergio stiffened at the sound of the voice before he carefully sat back up, his dark eyes settling on the woman who stood beside the table, a sheepish expression perched on her features.

“It’s been a while” she babbled quietly, trying to fill the tense silence.

Sergio eyed her for a couple of seconds before he shook his head. “What are you doing here, Pilar?” he muttered.
