Somebody Like Me
Sixty One: I’d Hope Not
Letting out a small sigh, Sergio tossed onto his side, his hand blindly feeling across the end table in search of his phone which vibrated annoyingly against the wood. Peeking an eye open, he quickly collected the phone before he allowed his eyes scan the screen, quickly scanning the message that filled it. Composing a quick response, he set the phone onto silent before he carefully rolled onto his back, his dark eyes settling on Cassie who was still contently huddled up at his side, her soft breathing filling the quiet bedroom.
Allowing a soft yawn to fall out of his mouth, he watched her sleep for a couple of seconds before he carefully ducked his head, pressing a soft kiss against her temple. It felt odd, the idea that he and Cassie were engaged was one which he was sure would take more than a little getting used to, but he had to admit that it was something which made him happy, even if it had taken Cassie a few days to agree. The mere idea that they were ready to take the next step forwards in their relationship had a grin itching to appear on his face.
He had been worried, when Cassie had asked him for a few days to think about his proposal, a small part of Sergio had been convinced that she would say no, but he was relieved that she hadn’t, even if he was sure that it would be a while before they found themselves actually planning a wedding. He was simply glad that she hadn’t turned him down.
Sparing another gentle yawn, he pressed another light kiss to the side of Cassie’s head before he gently pushed himself up to his feet, moving to collect a clean t-shirt. Pulling it over his head, he spared another soft glance towards Cassie before he shook his head, a small awed laugh falling out of his mouth. He knew that it was going to take some time, the idea that he and Cassie were engaged was one which was going to feel a little unfamiliar for a while, but he liked how strange it felt. He liked the idea that they were moving forwards.

Pulling her dark hair up into a ponytail, Cassie allowed a soft yawn to fall out of her mouth, her green eyes checking the time on the clock which stood on the nightstand. She knew that it was a little later than usual, she had briefly stirred when Sergio had gotten out of bed, but she had opted to take advantage of his day off, wanting to lay in for a little while.
Brushing a few stray dark hairs out of her eyes, she swung her feet to the floor before the sound of the bedroom door edging open reached her ears, causing her to lift her head, her green eyes settling on Sergio who’d moved to step into the room, Noah rested against his hip.
“Look who’s finally awake, Noah” Sergio quipped impishly “We were starting to think you might just stay in here all day” he added as he stepped towards the bed, quickly settling the little boy down on the mattress.
Cassie, who’d watched them into the room, rolled her eyes slightly. “I had a late night” she noted “And I figured, with you here, I could have a couple of hours to lay in. Was that a problem?” she posed playfully.
Sergio let out a soft laugh before he shook his head. “Of course not” he noted “Last night was a pretty late one and I don’t mind being the first one up with Noah. You should let me do it more often” he added as he sat down beside her, his fingers lightly tickling the bottom of Noah’s foot. Noah, who’d been contently messing with the stuffed toy he held in his hands, squeaked with laughter, something which made Cassie smile gently before she ducked down, pressing a light kiss against the top of his head.
Sergio watched the two of them for a couple of seconds before he carefully pushed himself up to his feet, moving towards his dresser. Gently pulling one of the drawers open, he rifled through it for a couple of seconds before he found what he was looking for, pulling it into his hand.
“What are you doing?”
Sergio, who’d been admiring the small velvet box, startled at the sound of Cassie’s voice before he turned slightly, offering her a boyish smile. “I was looking for something” he noted as he padded back towards the bed.
Cassie lifted an eyebrow. “What were you looking for?” she asked.
Sergio admired the look on her face briefly before he shook his head, sparing a small amused chuckle. “You don’t have to look so worried, Cass” he teased, impishly prodding her side “It’s just something I feel like I should give to you now” he added before he lifted his hand, carefully settling the small velvet box into her lap.
Cassie spared a soft look down towards the box before she lifted it into her hand, carefully flicking it open before a soft squeak fell out of her mouth.
“I’m guessing that that noise was a good thing, Cassie” Sergio teased softly.
Cassie, who’d been admiring the ring, blinked a couple of times before she lifted her head, her green eyes peeking towards him softly. “You chose this?” she posed gently.
Sergio nodded. “All by myself” he boasted proudly “Why, don’t you like it?” he added softly.
Cassie shook her head. “It’s…It’s beautiful, Sergio” she breathed softly.
Sergio smiled a little at the awe in her voice before he carefully leant towards her, pulling the ring out of the box before he took a hold of her hand, gently slipping it onto her finger. “I think it looks pretty good” he teased softly, pressing a light kiss against the back of her hand.
Cassie spared a small laugh before she carefully pulled her hand back, her green eyes admiring it quietly.
Sergio watched her for a couple of seconds, admiring the bright smile she wore, before he shook his head. “You’re still sticking by the answer you gave me last night?” he posed softly. He didn’t want to cause a problem, as far as he was concerned, Cassie had said yes and they were going to end up getting married, but still he wanted to make sure. The last thing he wanted was for her to change her mind further down the line.
Cassie, who’d been quietly studying the ring, blinked a couple of times at his question before she lifted her head. “You think I could have changed my mind in a matter of hours?” she posed, her voice half teasing.
“I’d hope not” Sergio replied gently “But I thought I would ask if you were still sure before we start to tell people. I doubt that this is something that we’re going to be able to keep under wraps for very long” he added, his hand gently taking a hold of hers.
Cassie scoffed. “My papa will know the second he sees me” she quipped “And your madre will be the same, but I want you to know that I am sure about this, Sese. I’d never have said yes if I wasn’t” she added, her fingers messing playfully with his.
Sergio offered her a small look, wordlessly asking if she was certain, before he nodded his head, offering her a bright impish smile. “That means that you’re my fiancée, right?” he poked playfully.
Cassie’s cheeks warmed a little at his use of the word ‘fiancée’ before she quirked a small smile. “It does” she confirmed gently “That’s pretty odd, isn’t it?” she posed.
Sergio shrugged his shoulders. “Slightly” he quipped “But it’s a pretty good kind of strange. You’re stuck with me now” he added, offering her another boyish smile.
Cassie spared a soft laugh before she gently leant towards him, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek. “You’re not the worst person I could be stuck with me” she teased gently “I mean, sometimes you’re pretty cute and romantic” she added, poking his side playfully.
Sergio offered her a dramatic eye roll before he carefully pulled her towards him, allowing him to press a soft kiss against her lips. “You love me really” he mumbled with a small pout of his face.
Cassie giggled at the childish expression on his face before she nodded her head. “I do love you, Sergio” she mused softly “You know that” she added.
Sergio offered her a small smile before he nodded his head. “I do” he confirmed softly “And I love you too, Cass” he added brightly.
Cassie offered him another soft smile before she moved to cuddle into his side slightly, encouraging Sergio to wrap her in a soft hug. It was going to take a little time, for a while, the novelty of being newly engaged would feel a little strange, but Cassie was sure that they’d get used to it, even if planning a wedding didn’t happen for a while. She was sure that they’d grow used to how serious things were between the two of them.
