Somebody Like Me

Seventy Four: Wish You Were Here

Allowing a soft yawn to fall out of his mouth, Sergio plopped down onto the couch in his hotel room, his dark eyes settling on the laptop which he had neatly stowed on the coffee table ahead of him. It was early, with him having a match that night and Cassie having plans for most of the day, they’d arranged for their video chat to take place a little earlier that day, but still Sergio was looking forwards to it, even if it had cost him a little more time in bed, he was looking forwards to seeing his girlfriend again.

It had been a little while, after he had left Madrid to join up with the national team, a little under two weeks had passed, and whilst he was pleased that Spain were doing well, a small part of him couldn’t wait to get home. He missed it, spending time with Cassie and Noah, and he couldn’t wait to get back to it, even if he did want Spain to succeed. He couldn’t wait to see Cassie and Noah face to face again.

Gently pushing a hand back through his hair, he moved to open the laptop before he quickly found Cassie’s name, clicking on it in order to start a call. Pausing for a few seconds, he allowed the dial tone to fill the air before Cassie’s face appeared on the screen, something which caused him to smile gently. It wasn’t the first call, since he had left, they’d developed a habit of calling one another more than once a day, and whilst it was slightly sentimental, Sergio knew that he wouldn’t have changed it, even if a few of his teammates did tease him for it. He enjoyed talking to her.

“You remembered that I was calling” Sergio teased impishly “I was half expecting you to have forgotten” he added softly.

Cassie rolled her eyes. “I could hang up if you’d prefer” she countered “I mean, I did get out of bed early just for you, but if you’re going to be an idiot…” she trailed off, a small playful smile appearing her face.

Sergio admired her smile before he shook his head, a small laugh falling out of his mouth. “I’ll try not to be an idiot” he quipped softly “But I am glad to see you. I’m sorry about the early call” he added, watching as she yawned into her hand gently.

Cassie, who’d moved to pull her hair up into a ponytail, shook her head. “It’s alright” she mused softly “I mean, I would have liked a little while longer in bed, but I know that you’re busy tonight and I don’t mind you calling early. It’s better than you not calling at all” she added gently.

Sergio offered her a slightly dubious look, wordlessly asking if she was sure, before he nodded his head, sparing her a small smile. “What’ve you got planned for today?” he posed gently. It was their routine, whenever they called one another, they simply spent their time talking about little things that weren’t overly important, but still Sergio enjoyed their calls, even if they were just small talk. He merely liked the idea of talking to her.

Cassie shrugged. “Sara and Iker in town” she mused gently “And I figured, with her being around, I would go with her and Mia and look at bridesmaids’ dresses, just to get an idea of what it is that I’m looking for” she added, her fingers fiddling with the zip of the sweatshirt that she wore.

Sergio watched the small shy movements of her hands before he quirked a small smile. “You know, you really don’t have to look so nervous when you talk about wedding planning, Cass” he mused softly “I mean, if anything, I love hearing you talk about it. I kind of like the idea that you’re looking forwards to our big day” he added, his voice warm and encouraging.

Cassie offered him a glance before she shook her head, her cheeks tinting a soft shade of pink. “It’s still a little strange” she admitted softly “I mean, I am sure that this is what I want to do, but the idea of planning a wedding…it still seems a little strange to me” she babbled softly.

Sergio smiled a little at the familiar nervousness in her voice before he shook his head. “I know it does” he mused softly “I mean, you still get all shy when you talk about it, but it is a good kind of strange, Cass. It’s another step forwards for us, a good step forwards, and I am sure that you’ll plan out the best day for us. I mean, you’re a perfectionist after all, I doubt that you’ll let us look like idiots” he added, offering her a warm and encouraging grin. It wasn’t the first time, since they’d settled on a wedding date, Cassie had appeared slightly apprehensive more than once, but Sergio wanted to encourage her to relax a little, wanting her to enjoy the idea of planning their wedding rather than being scared by it.

Cassie offered him a small look, briefly mulling over his words, before she nodded her head quietly, something which made Sergio smile warmly. “You know, I really wish I could hug you right now” he noted softly “I mean, I know it’s only been a couple of weeks, but I kind of miss it” he added gently.

“I wish that too” Cassie replied softly, her green eyes meeting his darker ones “But you’ve still got a tournament to win before you can contemplate coming home” she added, offering him a small smile.

Sergio nodded. “I know that” he quipped “But it doesn’t mean that I don’t miss you” he added, his voice softening a little.

Cassie smiled a little at the soft tone of his voice before she shook her head. “You know that I miss you too” she mused softly “But it won’t be too long before you’re back here and I know that I’m looking forwards to that, as is Noah. He’s missed his papa” she added gently.

Sergio grinned a little at the mention of the little boy before the sound of footsteps reached his ears, causing him to look up, his dark eyes settled on Isco who had padded into the room, a slightly irked expression on his features.

“You have to go?”

Sergio jumped a little at the sound of Cassie’s voice before he nodded his head. “I’ve disturbed Isco’s beauty sleep” he quipped “And he doesn’t look at all happy about it. I should probably get going before he tries to get the laptop off of me and toss it out of the window” he added teasingly.

Cassie spared a soft laugh before she nodded. “I’ll call you tomorrow?” she posed softly.

“I’ll look forwards to it” Sergio mused “You’ll be watching the match tonight, won’t you?” he added gently.

Cassie snorted. “Iker’s already made plans to come over and watch it with me and Noah” she noted with a small smile.

Sergio chuckled softly. “That sounds like him” he mused gently.

Cassie nodded her head gently. “We’ll watch the game, Sese” she mused softly “But I’m sure that you’ll do well. I’ll call you tomorrow evening. I love you” she added warmly.

Sergio grinned at the sound of the three words before he blew a kiss at the screen, mumbling them in return before he hung up the call, wordlessly hoping that it wouldn’t be too much longer before he was back home.
