Somebody Like Me

Ninety Six: Promise Me Something

“How are you feeling?”

Cassie, who was quietly sipping on the glass of water which sat in her hands, smiled a little at the sound of Sergio’s concerned voice before she lifted her head, peeking towards the spot he stood in beside the door. It had been a while, after she had informed him that her contractions had started, a few hours had passed, and with her waters having broken on the way home, they’d been quick to head to hospital, something which relaxed Cassie slightly, even if she was confident that they still had a little while before the two babies put in their first appearance. She was glad that they had made it to the hospital in plenty of time.

“I’m doing alright” she noted softly “I mean, the contractions are still a little way apart, but we’re getting there. Elsa said that I was about 6cm when she was here last” she added, her hand lightly patting the spot beside her.

Sergio offered her a small grin before he sat down beside her, his hand quickly taking a hold of hers. “I just called Mia to check on Noah” he mused, breaking the quiet which had settled around the two of them.

Cassie, who’d moved to get a little more comfortable against her pillow, tilted her head. “Is he OK?” she posed softly.

“He was a little fussy when it came to his bedtime” Sergio noted “But, Mia said that he settled down pretty quickly and that he’s happily asleep. She’s going to keep an eye on him until your papa gets here and then he’s going to take Noah back to ours” he explained, his voice warm and reassuring. He knew that Cassie was a little apprehensive, even if she hadn’t said anything, he knew that she was slightly concerned about the idea of giving birth for a second time, and he wanted to encourage her to be as calm as she could be, not wanting there to be any sort of complication when it came to delivering the babies.

“You spoke to my papa?” Cassie posed.

“I called him before I called Mia” Sergio noted “And I called my parents too. I figured they ought to know that they’re only a few hours away from having two new little grandbabies to fuss about” he added, offering her a small impish smile.

Cassie admired the warm grin he wore before she felt another contraction, something which caused her to grimace as a groan fell out of her mouth, her hand squeezing Sergio’s tightly. Sergio flinched, slightly surprised by her grip, before he pushed himself up to his feet, mumbling soft reassuring words in her ear until the contraction passed. “Do you want me to get you anything?” he posed softly, his fingers brushing some damp hair off of her forehead.

Cassie shook her head. “I’m alright” she mused softly.

Sergio offered her a dubious look, wordlessly asking if she was sure, before he nodded his head, moving to sit down beside her once more. “Have you given any more thought to what you want to call these two?” he posed softly, his fingers lightly tracing comforting shapes into the back of her hand. He knew that they had time, even after the babies were born, they still had a little time to figure what they wanted to call them, but he wanted to distract Cassie. From where he was sitting, they still had a way to go until the babies arrived.

Cassie, who’d tilted her head back, shrugged. “I’ve given it some thought” she noted softly “But I’ve not settled on anything. You?” she posed as she closed her eyes, trying to relax for a few seconds.

Sergio watched her for a couple of seconds before he gently pushed himself up to his feet, pressing a soft kiss against her warm forehead. “I’ve got a couple in mind” he mumbled softly “But they can keep. You should try and relax, nena” he added, gently brushing his thumb over her cheekbone.

Cassie opened her mouth to object, but was cut off as Sergio leant into her, pressing a soft kiss against her lips. “Relax, nena” he mumbled softly.

Cassie briefly contemplated arguing with him but opted against it, instead opting to rest back in her bed, her green eyes closing. Sergio watched her softly before he retook his seat at the side of the bed, wordlessly hoping that it wouldn’t be too much longer before the twins arrived.

“Are we nearly there yet, Elsa?” Sergio posed from his spot beside the bed, his dark eyes settled on the midwife who sat at the end of the bed, checking Cassie over. It had been a while, since they had arrived at the hospital, almost 11 hours had passed, and Sergio was hopeful that they didn’t have much longer to wait. He hated it, seeing Cassie so uncomfortable got to him, and he was hopeful that it was almost over. He just wanted Cassie and the twins to be alright.

Elsa, who was quietly checking Cassie over, quirked a small smile at the sound of concern in the defender’s voice before she carefully shuffled away from the end of the bed, looking up at him. “I think we’re about ready to get going” she mused gently “Cassie’s 10cm” she added.

“I am?” Cassie posed softly.

Elsa spared a soft laugh before she nodded her head. “You are” she confirmed gently “Now, I’m just going to go and get changed and then we’ll move you through to the delivery room so that we can deliver those twins of yours, alright?” she asked softly, a reassuring grin perched on her face.

Cassie offered her shy look before she nodded her head, something which caused the midwife to duck out of the room.

“You alright?”

Cassie, who’d been watching Elsa out of the room, turned at the sound of Sergio’s voice before she nodded. “I think so” she noted softly “But, promise me, you’re not going to knock me up again the near future, right?” she added, offering him a playful grin.

Sergio laughed gently before he stepped towards her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “I think we can probably afford to wait a while if we do decide that we want another one” he mumbled quietly, kissing down the side of her face until he reached her lips.

Cassie smiled into the kiss for a few moments before the sound of the door being opened reached her ears, causing her to duck back slightly, a nervous expression appearing on her features.

Sergio took note of the nervousness before he offered his hand out to her, a reassuring smile on his face. “You ready to be a mama again?” he posed softly.

Cassie peeked up at him shyly before she nodded her head, something which caused Sergio to squeeze her hand softly, wordlessly assuring her that things would be alright.

Leaning forwards in his seat, Sergio spared a small yawn, his dark eyes not shifting away from the two bassinettes which sat ahead of him, each housing a tiny baby. It had been hectic, after Cassie had been moved into the delivery room, things had moved particularly quickly, but Sergio was thrilled with outcome, even if it had taken a while for the two babies to arrive. He doubted he could be more smitten with the two infants. They were tiny, smaller than he even remembered Noah being, and Sergio was in awe of them.

Running a hand over his face, he allowed another yawn to tumble out of his mouth before the sound of stirring reached his ears, causing him to sit up a little more, his attention shifting towards the little girl who stirred softly in her crib. Smiling softly, he pushed himself up to his feet before he moved to lift the baby into his arms, settling her against his chest. “You’ve got to be quiet, little one” he murmured softly “Your mama, she spent a lot or hours awake waiting for you and your brother and I think it is only fair that we let her sleep for a while” he added, his dark eyes peeking towards the bed where Cassie laid, sleeping contently.

Offering her a gentle smile, he moved to settle back down in his seat before he flicked his attention down towards the little girl who laid in his arms, stirring quietly. Watching the small delicate movements of her little fingers, he sniffed a little before he ducked down, pressing a soft kiss against the top of her head. “I’m glad that you’re here” he murmured softly “We’ve spent a lot of months waiting for you and for your brother, and I am glad that you’re finally here, princesa” he added as he carefully smoothed out the tufts of dark brown hair which sat on the top of her head.

The baby stirred a little, a tiny yawn falling out of her mouth, before she snuggled a little closer to her father’s chest, something which made Sergio shake his head slightly before he pressed another kiss against the top of her head, wordlessly fussing about how happy he was that things had worked out as they had.
