I left the Dunkin Donuts quickly with my friend Ryan. We stopped for coffee on our way home from class and he pointed out that someone was staring at me. That someone was none other than Mr. Stephen Gomez.

I couldn't wrap my head around that idea. He was here, in Rhode Island. And not in Arizona. I also couldn't figure out why John hadn't warned me or anything. He had to be here too. Stephen wouldn't just randomly bring Josh up here by themselves, would he?

I walked into my apartment and dropped my keys on the counter. I dialed John's number. He picked up a few rings later.

"You could have warned me" he said. I heard a bunch of voices talking in the background. I could clearly pick out Jess but I was unsure of the others.

"I don't know what you're talking about" I could hear the smirk in his voice. I sighed. "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't tell you because I miss you. We all miss you. I thought if I told you, you'd leave again and I wouldn't get to see you. I thought you finding out on your own would be easier for you." he said sympathetically.

I didn't know what to say. i had called him with the intention of being angry but now I was feeling bad. "I miss you guys too"

"Well what are you doing tonight? We can all hang out" he said excitedly.

"I don't think that's a good idea." I know it’s been forever, but still.... what Stephen did... I probably overreacted. People get cheated on all the time, I kept telling myself. But those people aren't coming out of a bad relationship. Those people didn't fall in love their best friend.

"Because of Stephen? Come on, Dakotah. It'll be fine." he reassured me, but I still felt that sinking feeling in my stomach. The voices on the other end seemed to quiet for a moment.

"Okay." I closed my eyes and thought about what I just agreed to. I missed them all like crazy. It wasn't fair for me to ditch all of them for something that happened between me and Stephen. It will be good for me to see them. The three years without them seemed never ending. I missed how John and I could tell each other everything, even when they were about his own brother. I missed Jess and how she could always make hanging out into an event. I missed how Brian and Josh would run around like little kids and say such funny things. And Stephen, well I just missed him.

We made plans to meet at a benefit show they were doing tonight and then he said we would all go out for drinks after. After I hung up with him, I immediately called my roommates, Evan and Sara. I had asked them both to come along, for moral support. Sara was driving back home tonight for the weekend so she wasn't able to tag along, but Evan was all in.

I got dressed up nice. It was the first time I’d be face two face with the 5 of them in five years and I wanted to look good. I did my makeup and hair so that I looked decent and went to pick up Evan from his friend’s.

"You okay with this?" he smirked when he got into the car. I shook my head. I was nervous. "He might not even be there. And he's probably just as nervous as you" he reassured me.

"I'm not nervous." I lied. He laughed. "Shut up."

"It'll be fine. That's why I'm here" he said as I parked the car outside the venue.

"Yeah and as soon as you see a hot girl you'll be gone" I laughed. I pulled down the mirror to check my makeup before unbuckling.

We found a place near the merch table to stand and wait for them. Brian caught my eye and smiled. They finished up their last two songs, new ones I hadn't heard before, and walked off stage.

"Dakotah!!!" John yelled as his arms engulfed me from behind.

"Hi john" I smiled. He hugged me and the rest of the gang congregated near behind us. "Um, this is my roommate, Evan" I introduced them. Everyone greeted us, and I received a hug from everyone, well, almost everyone. We all walked outside and got in our cars and drove ourselves to the bar Brian had chosen. We got stuck in traffic, and by the time Evan and I got there, John and Stephen had saved us a table. Stephen gave me a small smile as I passed by him to take a seat. I returned it. I could do this. I could be friends with Stephen. This could all work out fine, as long as I kept a little distance. I would be okay.

"So Dakotah, you miss us?" John asked me. Evan was by my side, his arm protectively around me, and we sat across from the other two.

"Oh, of course, you're all I thought about" I joked, rolling my eyes.

"Do you miss Arizona?" Stephen asked. He said it completely normally, like we were still best friends, like I had seen him just last weekend. It was the first time he had talked to me since I'd know he was here.

"A little." I nodded, "but I don't regret leaving."

"Why did you leave?" he asked quieter.

"Hey guys! Sorry we're late, Jess made us stop and get gas first." Brian interrupted. I didn't break my gaze from Stephen. He didn't either, but I couldn't answer him now with everyone talking. Our small conversation had disintegrated and the majority of my night was spent with Jess, John, Josh, and Evan.

Evan and I returned home around 2:30 and we were both pretty tipsy. "Do we have any alcohol here?" I laughed. He nodded and took a few bottles from the cabinet. I sunk down to the floor in front of the cabinet and took one of them from him. He sat down next to me and took a swig from the whiskey he had, wincing as it went down.

"Ya know. This wasn't such a bad idea. We get to get drunk, and you get to get over your crush" he slurred after drinking about half the bottle.

"I'm over it" I lied. I took a drink and slumped to the side so I was leaning against Evan's shoulder. He kissed the top of my head and my phone buzzed from across the room. I didn't realize how drunk I had become until I tried to stand up. I fell back down again and he was in hysterics. I managed to get up and walk over to my phone without falling on my next try. "I'll get the music!" Evan yelled and leapt across the room to the stereo. He turned it on and blasted some awful rap song neither of us knew.

I forgot about the phone and dropped it onto the counter to dance with Evan. I hope it’s not important.
