If We Jump

I Can't Imagine Being Anywhere Else

Stephen and Brent each ended up getting 2 days of in-school suspension, but they seemed to pass quickly and soon we were sitting Jess’s living room hanging out like always. There were bowls of chips and popcorn out on the coffee table along with our drinks on their coasters. The gang was currently howling with laughter at something stupid Josh had said, just like always. It was a nice feeling. Everything was the way it should be, Stephen beside me on the couch, Josh cracking jokes, Brian interrupting everyone’s sentences, and John making goofy faces at us.

I leaned my head on Stephen’s shoulder. “I’m going to miss this.” I sighed once the laughter had died down. “Miss what?” Stephen asked.

“This, just sitting here with all of you, laughing and having fun. It’s all going to end soon when you guys go out on tour.” I said sadly. The year was almost over. I felt like I knew them my whole life. They were always here for me no matter what, especially Stephen. I think I’m going to miss him the most. I’d be lost without him.

Stephen rubbed my arm and john quickly spoke up, “wait, you mean you’re not coming with us?!” he seemed genuinely hurt by that fact. They had all offered me the opportunity in the past but I never thought they were serious. I shook my head at John, “I can’t”.

“What?! Why not?!” he demanded. It was so hard to contain my laughter. “I’ll tell you when you’re older” I said, not having a real excuse. There was a football game on TV that all the guys were involved with. Me and Jess had retreated to her room to have some girl time while they watched it.

“You and Stephen need to just hook up already and save yourselves some time.” She said impatiently.

“What are you talking about?” I laughed at the thought of Stephen ever willingly doing something like that. He had never expressed any interest like that towards me.

“c’mon, you like Stephen, Stephen likes you. It’s all going to happen eventually!” she laughed, throwing her arms into the air. I fell back onto the bed and stared at the ceiling. “Nah, Stephen doesn’t think of me like that.”

“You’re so blinded” she smirked, sitting down in her computer chair and spinning in circles. “I still can’t believe he got into a fight”

“Yeah I know, I’ve never seen him that mad” I said. I hope he told her something to explain why he did it so I wouldn’t have to tell her the truth. Thankfully she didn’t ask why she just turned on some music. I liked having this girl time with Jess, even when we ran out of things to talk about it was still nice to have someone to sit with. It was about 11o’clock and I decided to go home considering tomorrow was Friday, meaning I’d have to wake up in 7 hours to get ready for school.

The next morning I found myself hitting snooze on my alarm clock far too many times. Eventually I got out of bed and got ready as fast as I could. Despite my best efforts, I still got to school late. My day pretty much sucked. I was late to school and we had a chem test first period.

After school Stephen had asked me to hang out. He followed me to my house so I could drop my car off and then we went to some nearby ice cream shop. “When do you leave?” I asked him before taking a spoonful of my vanilla ice cream.

“The day after graduation.” He sighed.

“That’s only two weeks away…” I said. I only had two weeks left with them? It couldn’t be here so soon. I needed more time. The year had gone by much too quickly. I couldn’t lose them just yet.

“I know. Why don’t you want to come with us?” he asked.
I shrugged. I didn’t want to go with them, because I liked Stephen a lot more than I should. Going on tour meant seeing thousands of girl hang all over him every day. It also meant watching him hang all over other girls, but of course I’d never tell him that reason. “I don’t know, isn’t going to be kind of awkward with this random girl on your bus?”

“Did you forget about Jess?” he asked and started laughing. “Well no, but I’m not in the band. And there’s probably no room for me anyway.”

“We have an extra bunk” he said matter-of-factly. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”

“Stephen… I don’t know” I said, unsure. He stuck out his bottom lip and gave me those adorable, brown, puppy dog eyes. “Please” he begged.
“Alright.” I sighed, giving up. “But only because you bought me ice cream” I said and a big smile crept up on his lips.
