Back Into Your Arms

Chapter 26

A week had passed by when my mother called me.

“Why haven’t you called me?” she complained. I was not in the mood of talking to her.

“I’ve been busy”

“Busy? Doing what?”

“Meeting new people”

“Oh”

“How are you mom?”

“I’m doing just great, I’ve been going to Zumba with the ladies from my quilting guild”

“Even you have friend’s mom”

“Why do you say that with such a negative tone?”

I rolled my eyes, glad she couldn't see me.

“I’m just saying…anyways how’s dad?”

“He’s doing great too, we just remodeled the kitchen”

“Oh wow, I should come by to see it and cook you guys a good meal”

“Oh no sweetie, that’s not necessary. I’ll send you some pictures, I know you are busy over there”

She was pushing me away, why had I never fully paid attention to it.

“Why do you never want me to visit?”

My mother was silent.

“Who said that?”

“Your actions”

“That’s not true”

“Then when can I visit?”

“Well…” she hesitated.

“I’m thinking about moving back”

“Moving where?”

“Back to Arizona”

“Excuse me?”

“I don’t want to live here anymore”

“And why is that?”

“There’s nothing for me here mom”

“That’s a lie Melody, you have a nice apartment, you run your own cooking school, you have a lovely boyfriend, you have Julie”

“I’m lonely mother, I have a lovely apartment all to myself, Julie has her own family. I run my own cooking school but it’s quite tiring sometimes and I’m no longer dating Alex”

My mother gasped.

“What happened with Alex?”

“He dumped me”

“He did not!”

“He did, like I said there is nothing for me here mom”

“But Arizona has nothing for you either dear”

That was a lie. It had John, my memories, my friends, my family.

“I’m moving back”

“Move anywhere you want, just not Arizona”

“I believe I’m 28 years old and I get to make my own decisions mom but thank you for your advice”

“Melody Riley”

“Mother”

“You’re acting really strange”

“I’m just fed up with all these lies” I said to her and hung up.

I was left wondering if I had been too harsh, if I had been too indirect, if she had caught on.
I blocked her number and disconnected my house phone. I didn’t want to deal with her right now.

I noticed it had started raining outside. I walked over to the window. Staring outside, watching the cars passing by.
It was then that I received flashes of something.

Yelling, my parents yelling at me. My brother was angry, I was upset.

“We will not allow it” my mother said.

More yelling.

A car crash.
