Candy Store

Chapter 4

Just a day after the incident with Mary-Alice and James, I’m approached by some kid with crazy red hair. He’s running his hands through that fucked up mess on his head and mumbling about something I can’t really hear. It’s not until her name slips out of his mouth that I even gain any interest, but then I’m all ears and focus.

“What?” I say, turning from my locker to face him head on. “You said something about Mary-Alice?”

He looks at me weird for a moment, eyebrows all over the place, but then he’s composed again. “Yeah. My sister. Alice,” he says. “She told me you -uh- helped her out with that James asshole?”

I think on that for a moment, think about this guy being her brother, quelling the burst of angry jealousy that flared the moment he said her name, before I knew who he was. I take him in. Recognize him from Advanced Calc and maybe he’s one of the guys on the ball team too? I’m not sure and at this moment it probably doesn't matter.

I shrug at his question, turn back to shoving books in my locker before slamming it shut. “He was all on her,” I say. “Didn't seem right.”
