Don't Let Me Drown
The Difference Between Hell And Home
When I woke up, I was facing him and our legs were tangled up together. He was leaving little kisses all over my face and I couldn’t help but smile. Everything felt so peaceful; I was genuinely happy for the first time in a very long time.
“Morning Sleepyhead” he smiled, “do yeh want breakfast?” I shook my head and kissed his lips. He seemed surprised but went along with it nonetheless. I glanced at the clock and saw that I only had 30 minutes before I had to leave for school.
“I have to go soon” I told him and he made a pouty face. “Don’t worry, summers almost here and then you can bug me all you want” I laughed. He smiled at first and then his face fell. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m going on tour soon” he said.
“oh.” Was all I could think of to say. He was going on tour for who knows how long, to have girls hanging all over him and to forget about me. Now was not the time to start a relationship. “When do you leave?”
“A week and a half. But then I’ll be back in two months.” He said, moving my hair out of my face. I nodded and we stayed laying together in silence for a while until I had to get ready.
When we had no choice but to get up out of bed, Oliver led me into a spare room full of boxes labeled ‘Drop Dead’. He told me to pick anything I wanted and he would meet me downstairs. I dug through the boxes until I found a pair of size 6 skinny jeans and white tank top that would fit me. I found a pair of flats buried in the bottom of one of the boxes with a cartoon cat adorning the toes and slipped them on.
When I went downstairs, he was standing by the door talking to Tom, who smiled and waved when he saw me.
“Are yeh ready to go?” Oliver asked me. I nodded and said goodbye to Tom before following Oliver out and getting into his car.
“yeh gonna come to my show tonight?” he asked, stopping his car outside the school.
“I didn’t know you had one”
“That’s why I’m inviting yeh, yeh ninny” he laughed, “I’ve got to go early for soundcheck and stuff but Tommy can bring yeh, he knows where it is”
“I don’t know. I don’t think your band mates are too fond of me” I told him honestly and his face scrunched up.
“That’s rubbish, they all like yeh. Matty’s just mad he can’t date yeh” he laughed.
“I’ll think about” I said with a smirk. Truth be told, I knew I would go. I had only heard the couple of songs that Tom had showed me, and I liked them, but I wanted to hear more and I wanted to see them all up on stage.
I opened the car door and stepped out but before I could shut the door behind me, he motioned or me to come closer. He gave me a long kiss that left me wanting more and said goodbye to me. I walked towards the crowd of people waiting to get inside and some random girl approached me.
“Was that Oli Sykes?” she said excitedly.
“Um, yeah. Why?” I asked, confused. She squealed in excitement when I answered.
“oh my god, I love him. Are you guys, like, dating?” she said. Apparently she was a fan.
“No, not quite” I answered with a laugh. I walked into the school and to my locker while she followed me asking all sorts of questions about him.
By the end of the day, the news had spread through the entire school. I guess Bring Me The Horizon was more popular than I thought. Oli was just over 3 years older than me, but the little bit of music I had heard led me to believe the fans would be much older than us.
As I walked out of school with Jade, there was whispering and pointing all around us. I did my best to ignore it as I got into her car. When I got home I ran into Parker in the kitchen.
“Did you stay at Oli’s last night?”
“That depends, are you gonna try to fight him?” I said, crossing my arms.
“No,” he chuckled, “as long as you know what you’re getting into, date him if you want. Just don’t come crying to me when he breaks your heart, but I’ll leave it alone now” he said. I never thought he’d say something like that. He was incredibly over-protective when it came to anything else, and he’s been trying to keep me away from his friend since the start.
I made myself a sandwich and sat in silence at the table with my brother to eat.
Sometime later, while I was working on my homework, I saw Tom’s car pull into the driveway. I closed my books and headed downstairs. We had a fairly long drive ahead of us, but Tom and I got on well and we talked the whole way there. He told me more about the band and how he followed them with his camera for a movie he was making.
We pulled up at a venue and Tom flashed a pass to the bouncer, getting us both in. Bring Me The Horizon was halfway through their first song as we walked through the crowd. There must have been a thousand people in there, maybe more.
Oliver introduce the next song as Chelsea Smile and the crowd went absolutely insane. It was the most magnificent thing I had ever seen. Tom had left to go to the stage and take pictures for the band. I zoned out for a while, feeling the vibrations of the music and taking in the energy of the crowd.
“This is our last song,” Oliver announced into the microphone as he walked across the stage, “I’ve been lookin’ for yeh’ he said, his eyes landing on mine with a smile. I blushed as a few people turned to look at me.
“There’s a girl in the back there, yeah some of yeh see ‘er” he said, walking back and forth across the stage. Matty looked up and gave me a wave and a smile which I returned. “Her name’s Ivy. While we finish off our set, I want yeh to pick her up and crowd-surf her up here” Oli said, laughing at the expression on my face.
The band geared up and started playing a song called It Never Ends. “get her up here” Oli said to the crowd before belting out the lyrics to his song. I was lifted up against my will and before I knew it, I was lying on top of the crowd, their hands pushing me towards the front. I was spun around numerous times and brought from one side to the other before finally reaching the front, where a security guard helped me over the barricade. It was a strange experience to say the least, but the energy and feeling in the room had me so hyped up, nothing could bring me down.
When my feet were safely back on the floor, Tom grabbed my hand and brought me backstage with him. We waited back there until Bring Me The Horizon walked off, drenched in sweat.
“Morning Sleepyhead” he smiled, “do yeh want breakfast?” I shook my head and kissed his lips. He seemed surprised but went along with it nonetheless. I glanced at the clock and saw that I only had 30 minutes before I had to leave for school.
