If You Love Me

Twenty Two: I Like Where It’s Going

Gently placing another piece of folded laundry into the basket which sat on the couch, Nora shook her head, making a mental note to spend a little more time in her apartment. It was infrequent, with her relationship with Gerard progressing, she tended to favour spending the night in his spare bedroom as opposed to her own apartment, and she was a little irked by the amount of housework that had built up, even if she had only spent a few nights in her home, she was a little amazed by how much work there was.

Sparing a glance towards the pile of laundry, she moved to pull her blonde hair up into a loose ponytail before the sound of her phone vibrating against the coffee table reached her ears, causing her to lean forwards, lifting it up into her hand. She knew who the message would be from, with Gerard having travelled away for the night for a match, she knew that it was likely that it was a message from him telling her that there were getting ready to leave for the stadium, but still she was a little pleased to receive it, even if it was only a few words long. She liked the idea that she was on his mind.

It had been a little while, after the two of them had attended the anniversary party together, a few weeks had passed, and Nora had to admit that she was pleased with how things were going. It was steady, even despite the fact that people knew about them, things between them were still progressing at a steady and comfortable rate, and Nora was thrilled, even if there were still a few awkward moments or bumbled out words, she was more than happy with the way things seemed to be working out for the two of them.

Quirking a light smile, she typed a quick response to Gerard’s text before the sound of the doorbell reached her ears, causing her to lift her head. Frowning a little, she moved to stow her phone into the pocket of her jeans before she padded through the apartment, quickly pulling the door open to Antonella who stood on the other side, a warm grin on her face. “You’re home” she enthused brightly.

Nora blinked a couple of times, slightly surprised by the sight of the brunette, before she nodded. “Of course I am” she noted “Did I forget that we made plans?” she posed, a small frown on her face.

Antonella smiled a little at the frown on her face before she shook her head. “You didn’t” she noted “But Leo’s parents are in town and they offered to watch the boys for a little while so I thought I would come over. We could watch the match and catch up. I’ve not seen too much of you since…since you and Gerard” she added, her voice warm and teasing. It had been a surprise, the idea that one of Nora or Gerard had told the other how they felt had caught people by surprise, but Antonella was thrilled for them. They were good together, they always had been, and she was pleased that they’d finally put something together.

Nora’s cheeks warmed a little at the mention of the defender before she lightly shook her head, moving to step out of the doorway. “You know” she mused, closing the door behind Antonella “You could have called” she quipped as she padded back towards the living room.

Antonella, who followed along behind her, quirked a small smile before she gently nudged Nora’s shoulder. “Where would be the fun in that?” she teased impishly.

Nora, who’d moved to clear her couch, snorted a little before she shook her head, a small smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. It had been coming, with things between her and Gerard progressing, it had only been a matter of time before their friends wanted to make a fuss, and Nora was a little excited, even if she did want to keep things slightly close to her chest for a little longer.

“So” Antonella mused softly “You and Gerard are together?” she posed softly, her eyes peeking at Nora who sat on the couch beside her, sipping on the glass of lemonade which she held in her hand. It had been a good night, with the match playing in the background, Nora and Antonella had spent a little while catching up about various things, but for a while, they had skirted around the elephant in the room, something Antonella wanted to stop. She was curious, for a while, it had looked as though neither Gerard nor Nora would admit that there was something a little more than friendship between the two of them, and whilst she was happy for the two of them, she was slightly curious about how things were going.

Nora, who’d been quietly watching the television, startled a little at the sound of Antonella’s voice before she lifted her head, offering her a small nod. “We are” she confirmed gently “I mean, it’s still pretty early days, but we’ve been together for a couple of months and it seems to be working out. It’s been…it’s pretty nice” she babbled softly, her cheeks tinting a soft shade of pink.

Antonella smiled, not missing the blush on Nora’s cheeks, before she lightly shook her head. “You both looked pretty smitten in those pictures” she noted softly “Is it really going that well between the two of you?” she posed, her tone light, yet still curious.

Nora offered her a small look, not missing the tone of her voice, before she gently nodded her head. “It’s still early” she repeated softly “I mean, we have a few moments where we’re both a little awkward around one another, but we’re taking things slowly and it seems to be working out. I like having him around, Ella, I like how we are now when we’re together, and whilst it’s going to be a little slow moving, I like where it is heading” she explained softly. She knew that Antonella was curious, the look on her face and tone of her voice confided it, and she wanted offer her a little reassurance. Things were going well, they were settled and comfortable, and Nora was keen to keep it that way.

Antonella spared her a gentle glance, quietly mulling over her words, before she quirked a small smile. “I’m happy for you, Nora” she noted softly “I mean, for a long time, it looked as though the two of you were going to be too stubborn to realize what was right under your nose, but I am glad that you two figured it out. You’re good together, you have been for a while, and I hope that you can make it work. You deserve to be happy” she enthused warmly, her hand moving to squeeze Nora’s which pulled at a loose thread on her sock.

Nora spared a soft glance down towards her hand before she quirked a light smile, something Antonella was quick to return, offering her hand another light squeeze. She knew Nora, for a while, she was likely to be a little uncertain and shy about her relationship, but she was hopeful that it would work out for her. She hoped that between the two of them, she and Gerard made it would for a while to come.
