If You Love Me

Fifty Four: I Never Doubted It

Sipping on the cup of coffee which sat in his hand, Gerard spared a small yawn, readjusting himself in the slightly uncomfortable chair which sat beside Nora’s bed. It had been a quiet few hours, with both Nora and Alba doing well, the small family had been relatively undisturbed since the little girl had arrived, but Gerard knew that it wouldn’t last much longer, not with his parents and Nora’s mother on their way.

It had taken a little convincing, for a while, he had resisted the idea of calling their families to let them know that Alba had arrived safely, but Nora had convinced him that he needed to, even if it did mean that their peace and quiet was likely to be disturbed, he knew that he couldn’t avoid it forever.

Finishing the drink off, he moved to toss the empty cup into the bin before he shuffled a little closer to the bassinette which sat beside the bed, his blue eyes marveling at Alba who laid inside, contently sleeping. Watching the hypnotizing movements of her chest, he quirked a small smile before he gently reached his hand out, gingerly brushing his fingertips through the tufts of sandy brown hair which sat on her head.

Alba stirred a little at the feel of his fingers, but didn’t wake up, something which caused Gerard’s smile to widen a little before a small click entered his ears, causing him to look up, his eyes settling on Nora who stood a little away from him. “Have you put that camera down since you woke up?” he posed, his voice warm and amused.

Nora, who’d been admiring the picture that she had just taken, offered him a playful glare, something which made him chuckle gently before he pushed himself up to his feet, moving to lift the camera out of her hand. Offering her a boyish smile, he moved to flick through the pictures that she’d taken before he shook his head.

“I still can’t quite believe that she’s here” he noted “I mean, I know we’ve been waiting a long time for her to finally arrive, but now she’s here” he breathed, his eyes drifting towards Alba who was still happily sleeping. It still felt surreal, even after a few hours, the idea that he and Nora were parents had yet to settle in, but he knew that he wouldn’t have changed a thing, even if things had moved a lot quicker than he or Nora had planned for. He was more than thrilled with the way that things had worked out.

Nora, who’d settled down on the bed, smiled at the soft awed tone of his voice before she gently reached her hand out, tugging him into the seat beside her. “She is here” she enthused “And she’s wonderful” she added, peeking up at him softly.

Gerard snorted. “I never doubted that she would be” he noted “I mean, her madre’s pretty amazing” he added, flashing her a boyish smile.

Nora’s cheeks warmed a little at his compliment and at the sound of the word ‘madre’ before she shuffled a little closer to him, cuddling into his side as she rested her head against his shoulder, a soft yawn tumbling out of her mouth.

Gerard watched her yawn before he settled his arm around her waist. “How are you feeling?” he asked quietly, not wanting to disturb the comfortable quiet which had settled over the room.

Nora shrugged. “I’m alright” she mused “I mean, I’m sore and I can’t wait to get home, but I am fine. She’s worth it” she added, smiling a little as Alba let out a gentle snuffle in her sleep.

Gerard watched Alba stir for a couple of moments, admiring the small and delicate movements, before he shook his head, peeking down towards Nora who was happily cuddled against his side. “Have I said thank you yet?” he posed, brushing his fingers up and down her side.

Nora shook her head gently. “Gerard…”

“I know what you’re going to say” Gerard interrupted, offering her a small smile “But I still want to say it. I know it wasn’t the perfect timing, when you told me that you were pregnant, it more than surprised me, but I am so happy that it happened. We’ve made a pretty adorable baby and I want to thank you for that. Gracias, Nora” he insisted warmly.

Nora offered him a soft look, allowing his words to hang around them for a few moment, before she leant up slightly, pressing a soft kiss against his lips. Gerard smiled at the contact, holding her close to him for a few seconds, before the sound of someone clearing their throat reached his ears, causing him to pull away, his stare turning towards Maria who stood in the door way, a fond smile on her lips.

“I didn’t mean to intrude” she noted apologetically “The receptionist said that it would be alright to come through, but if you’d rather I left you to it, then I can come back” she added.

Gerard briefly contemplated accepting her offer before he shook his head, offering her a gentle smile. “You don’t have to do that” he noted “You should come in” he added.

Maria spared him a look, wordlessly asking if he was sure, before she stepped into the room, quickly moving to pull him into a soft hug. “Congratulations, papa” she teased warmly.

Gerard let out a soft laugh, something which made Maria pat his shoulder affectionately before she stepped towards the bed, quickly pulling Nora into a soft hug. “Nora, sweetheart” she fussed “How are you?” she added as she leant back, her eyes searching her daughter’s face.

Nora smiled at her mother’s concern before shrugged. “I’m OK” she noted “I mean, it took some time for her to arrive, but she’s here. Would you like to meet her?” she posed, gently gesturing over her mother’s shoulder towards Gerard who’d moved to lift Alba up into his arms.

Maria blinked a couple of times before she followed the line of Nora’s stare, her eyes settling on the tiny baby who sat in her father’s arms, stirring quietly. Swallowing slightly, she stared at the baby in awe for a couple of seconds before she shook her head, sniffling slightly. “Nora, Gerard” she breathed softly “She…She’s…beautiful” she stammered, stuck for anything else to say.

Gerard quirked a proud smile before he nodded his head. “She is” he grinned.

Maria wiped her eyes on her sleeve before she stepped towards him, wordlessly asking if it was alright to hold her. Gerard nodded his head and gently settled Alba into her arms, offering a kind smile before he ducked back, retaking his seat beside Nora who quickly shuffled closer to him, her hand gently taking his. “Does she have a name yet?” Maria posed softly “You mentioned something about having it figured out. Can I hear it now?” she added, her eyes not shifting away from the baby who sat in her arms.

“Of course” Nora enthused “We’ve decided to call her Alba Maria Piqué Hernandez” she noted.

Maria, who’d been fussing quietly over Alba, smiled fondly at the name before she flicked her attention back towards the baby, fussing about how proud her parents must be of her. Gerard nodded his head in agreement before he offered Nora’s waist a soft squeeze, something which caused her to smile up at him. She knew that it was going to take a while, with Alba around, things were likely to be hectic for a while, but she was happy, even if her pregnancy had come out of the blue. She adored Alba and she adored the little family that she had.
