If You Love Me

Seven: They Didn’t Tell You Either?

“So, Nora, what is it that you do for a living?”

Nora, who’d been pushing the last of her meal around her plate, startled a little at the sound of Daniel’s voice before she lifted her head, her blue eyes peeking towards where he sat. It had been awkward, with Emilia and Mateo having sprung the surprise of Daniel on her at the last moment, Nora hadn’t quite known what to say, and it had led to her being a little distant, even if it wasn’t what she intended. She didn’t quite know how to react to the idea of Emilia’s attempted matchmaking. She knew that her sister meant well, for a while, Emilia had been keen to see her little sister start looking to settle down, but still she was irked, even if she knew that Emilia’s intentions were good. She was irked that her sister had caught her by surprise.

Blinking a couple of times, she spared Daniel a soft look before she lightly shook her head, offering him a faint smile. “I’m an event organizer” she noted softly “I plan all sorts of things, but I specialize in birthday and anniversary parties” she added, her fingers gently fussing with the ends of her blonde hair.

Daniel, who’d moved to sip on his glass of lemonade, watched her for a couple of seconds before he offered her a small smile. “You enjoy it?” he posed gently.

“I do” Nora confirmed with a small nod “It’s a lot of fun at times” she added gently.

Daniel quirked a small smile, not surprised by the short answer, before he gently shook his head. It wasn’t the first time, since they had sat down, Nora had looked as though she wanted to be anywhere but sat with him, and Daniel couldn’t help but be slightly amused. It was clear that Nora, not unlike himself, had been caught off guard by Mateo and Emilia’s attempted matchmaking. Watching her for a couple more seconds, he spared another small shake of his head before a small laugh fell out of his mouth. “They didn’t tell you either?” he posed softly.

Nora, who’d moved back to pushing her food around her plate, tilted her head. “Huh?” she posed softly.

“Lia and Mateo, they didn’t tell you about me coming, did they?” Daniel clarified softly “I only ask because they failed to mention that you were coming to me” he added gently.

Nora tilted her head. “They did?” she posed gently.

Daniel spared a small chuckle before he nodded. “As far as I was aware, I was only supposed to be having lunch with the two of them. It was a pretty big surprise that Emilia had dragged you along with her” he explained warmly.

“It was a surprise to me too” Nora confirmed “I mean, I was surprised when Emmy showed up at my office, but more so when you appeared. I think it is my sister’s idea of matchmaking” she added, her cheeks tinting a soft shade of pink.

Daniel admired the soft blush on her cheeks before he shook his head. “It’s my fault” he noted “I kept telling Mateo that I was looking to get back to dating again and I think this was probably his solution. It’s been a while for you too?” he posed, offering her a small curious look.

Nora’s already pink cheeks darkened a little before she shrugged. “It’s complicated” she mumbled, not quite sure what else to say.

Daniel paused for a second, as if weighing up whether or not to push her on her answer, before he shook his head, flashing her another warm smile. “I think that we can both agree that this wasn’t the best idea” he noted gently “I mean, it’s been pretty awkward” he added.

Nora admired the warm smile on his face before she nodded her head. “It has been” she agreed gently “I am sorry that my sister and brother-in-law sprung this on you. I am sure that you could have found something a lot more fun to do with your lunch break” she added softly.

Daniel shrugged. “Lunch with a pretty girl isn’t exactly a bad thing, Nora” he teased, flashing her a boyish grin.

Nora smiled a little at his words before she gently shook her head, her cheeks warming slightly at the little compliment that he had offered to her. “I am still sorry, Dani” she noted “I had no idea that Emmy and Mateo had this planned and I want to apologize for them. I’m sorry that they put you out” she added gently.

“It’s not a problem, Nora” Daniel quipped “I mean, it’s been a little awkward, but it was still nice to meet you” he added, his voice warm and kind.

Nora offered him a soft shy smile before she spotted Emilia and Mateo making their way back towards the table, something which caused her to push herself back up to her feet. “I ought to get going” she noted softly “Dani, it was really nice to meet you” she added, her voice sincere and kind. It had been awkward, since she had sat down at the table, she had felt uncomfortable, but she was pleased that she had met Daniel, even if they had been pushed together. He seemed like a nice guy.

Daniel watched her stand up before he shifted a little in his seat, pulling his phone out of his jacket pocket. “I know that this hasn’t exactly been the best first date” he noted, a small teasing smile on his lips “I mean, your sister and brother-in-law sort of dumping us on one another has made things pretty awkward, but, I was hoping that…maybe you’d let me take you out to dinner some time, in order to make up for it. I am pretty confident that I can top this” he added, gently offering the phone out towards her.

Nora blinked a couple of times, slightly surprised by the offer, before she shook her head. “Dani…”

“It’s complicated” Daniel interrupted softly “I got that, but I would still like to take you out some time, Nora. I’d like a chance to get to know when it isn’t so forced and awkward” he added gently, trying to encourage her.

Nora stared at him, hesitating slightly, before she gently took the phone out of his hand, entering her number before she passed it back to him. “I’m making no promises” she noted softly.

Daniel nodded his head gently. “I get that” he added “But I will call you” he added with a soft smile.

Nora returned it hesitantly before she stepped away from the table, offering a small glance towards her sister as she stepped past her. Quietly stepping out of the restaurant, she spared a soft before she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, causing her to pull it out, her blue eyes softening a little at the sight of Gerard’s name on the screen, something which caused a small lump to appear in her throat.
