A Pause in Time

By half-crescent light we sat and smoked, blowing the smoke from our lungs up into the air where it danced in the moonlight that we bathed in. You were staring at me with eyes slightly squinted though your pupils were wide in the darkness. Thinking.

“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked, glancing up to match your gaze.

You smiled that half-grin you so often pulled, a flash of pearly whites between the softness of your lips. You were considering which thoughts you wanted to voice.

“I love you.”

I returned that grin, moving closer to you, letting that moment last.
