upon a dragon's back

The weight of the trials was a burden she could not carry on her own. She wondered if her clouded gaze was not a loud enough cry for help. She wondered if there was a reason her mind was cracked, pieces scattered in the wind for her to retrieve on her own.

Although she wasn't alone. She never was. But he could never reach into her far enough to help the tired soul she kept inside of her. He wished he could, like the sinister hand through his back, straight to his heart as it gripped his fears and held tight.

He could not reach, because she held her insecurities in her palms, away from his gaze. And with every moment she was unable to let them free, the more tired she grew. And the more they both wanted to stop suffering, and just sleep.
