Beautiful

Moment of Closure

"Your fingertips across my skin
the palm trees swaying in the wind
images"

Her keystrokes landed softly in the quiet of the night.

"you sang me spanish lullabies
the sweetest sadness in your eyes
clever trick"

Her words carried a heart-breaking tune, but she let them drag into the music.

"I'd never wanna see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me"

Her volume grew slightly louder, but the harmonic tension stayed in the song.

"goodbye, my almost lover
goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
can't you just let me be?"

Tears were stabbing at the corners of her eyes, she closed them.

"so long, my luckless romance
my back is turned on you
should've know you'd bring me heartache
almost lovers always do"

Pictures of them together scrolled on in her mind.

"we walked along a crowded street
you took my hand and danced with me
images"

The tears ran from her cheeks, down her neck, clinging to her tan skin.

"and when you left, you kissed my lips
you told me you would never ever forget these images
and oh"

Her voice faltered, but she kept going.

"I never wanted to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me"

She breathed in, then sang out with even more heart than before.

"goodbye, my almost lover
goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
can't you just let me be?
so long, my luckless romance
my back is turned on you
should've known you' d bring me heartache
almost lovers always do"

Her heart was cracking more and more with every note. She still sang.

"goodbye, my almost lover
goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
why can't you just let me be?
so long, my luckless romance
my back is turned on you
should've known you'd bring me heartache
almost lovers always do"

She was crying out to the silence of the night, but it didn't cry back.

"I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
without you on my mind
so you're gone and I'm haunted
and I bet you are just fine"

She lowered her voice to almost whisper.

"did I make it that easy
to walk right in and out
of my life?"

That word, "Beautiful" came to the front of her mind again, that awfully bittersweet word. She closed her eyes tighter, the music had consumed her, nothing else was there, only notes and keystrokes.

"goodbye, my almost lover
goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
why can't you just let me be?
so long, my luckless romance
my back is turned on you
should've known you'd bring me heartache
almost lovers always do"

Her hands floated over the keys of the baby grand, smooth as the tone of the music.
They glided to a halt as she finally pressed down the last keys of the song.
She exhaled in deep relief. Her eyes were still closed, and a feeling of great fatigue consumed her, and she slid off the edge of the piano bench. But there was no one there to catch her, no one to save her.
This time, she fell.
