Prologue
A lot of people have asked me what Captain Reed was like. Captain Reed, the hardcore veteran of the Dominion War; Captain Reed, who led us into battle against three Breen warships and won; Captain Reed, the man who, over the course of three years, took the time to have dinner with all 160 members of his crew at least once.
I can't promise that you'll be happy with what I say about him. What I can tell you is that once the Dominion War was over, I had the privilege of serving as his first officer for three years in the newly occupied Cardassian territories. I knew him not only has a war leader, but as a human being and a Starfleet officer who embodied every principle I'd been taught to expect from one.
My only regret is that he couldn't have been an officer in a better time in history and commanded vessels that did the real exploration that we, as Starfleet officers, were trained to be a part of.
