Rush Hour

XI: I wish I could say I don't know what happened

Okay, I couldn't sleep but at least I did something useful. My clothes are so perfectly ironed... Well, not really, but they look as if they were because I threw them inside a big black bag when I took them out of the dryer. Yes, I was too lazy to fold them. Plus, I hang them all anyway. I ran to my house so yeah, they were still kinda warm. So yeah, okay, forget about all the stuff I just said. At least my clothes are properly hanging inside my closet and now I kinda play "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" (at least the chorus).

We are delayed due to train traffic. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Oh, no. Not again. I look at my watch. It's gonna be a long ride.

The train stops moving. Let me guess... We are delayed due to train traffic.

We are delayed due to train traffic. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Yeah, I knew it. Well, at least I'm on my way. I yawn. I'm about to rub my eyes but I stop just in time. I don't want to look like a panda. At least not now that I'm here.

This is DeKalb Avenue. The next stop is Jefferson Street.

"Melissa, wake up", I suddenly hear. I open my eyes and I see Adam.

"Wha- where are we? 8th Avenue? Oh no, not aga..."

"No, no, don't get scared. It's Lorimer Street."

"Lorimer Street?"

"Yes, Lorimer Street. Before Bedford Avenue. Just in time, pretty much. You have to thank me... and get a coffee. Talking about coffee, do you want some coffee? I cannot afford Starbucks right now but I guess a big McDonald's coffee would be alright, at least to wake you up."

"Thank you, and don't worry, I can't afford Starbucks either. At least not before Friday. And even when I can afford it, I'm too stingy. I usually end up going to McDonald's anyway. In fact, I think I've gone to Starbucks only once... twice... three times. Yes, three times."

"Hey, wait a second. Once, twice, three times. It sounds rad. I'm definitely using that on a song."

"Talking about songs, when's John's gig?"

"Friday, I think..." Adam said, taking his phone out of his pocket and looking at the screen. "Yeah, Friday."

"So tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

"Sweetleaf?"

"Yeah."

"Awesome. I'm looking forward to it."

"Same. Do you mind if I invite Nathan too? He's friends with John as well. I think he'd be happy to see him again."

"Go ahead, can I invite Sarah? She's so into indie music."

"Of course."

This is 14th Street, Union Square.

"Let's go."

We started running.

"Are you aware you can transfer to the 6 train and it'd leave you closer to school?"

"Yes, but I love Union Square. I love looking at the squirrels and sometimes, if I'm early enough, I go to Barnes & Noble and I buy Alternative Press magazines."

"Cool, Nathan also buys them. Well, he usually gives me money and tells me to go buy them. He claims he's doing me a favor because I have so much time to spare before my classes start..."

"Isn't it true?"

"Yes, it is." He admits. "Plus, I used to gladly go to Barnes & Noble, there was a really cute cashier working there. I haven't seen her in two or three months, though. I guess she doesn't work there anymore."

"I like your honesty", I said.

"I'm sorry, sometimes I speak more than I should, don't I?"

"No, no, I'm serious. What can I say? I only watch action movies because of the actors. I couldn't care less about the story. I only watched Fight Club because..."

"Because of Brad Pitt."

"Yeah."

"It's funny that you mention it, because Fight Club is my favorite movie ever. I did watch it because of the story, though." He grinned. "I wanted to write a thesis about Fight Club but they told me it was a bad idea. I don't think so. I finished it anyway, but I'm not using it to get my degree. I did it more for fun than anything else. You can read it if you want."

"You've gotta send it to me or something", I said. "See you at three!"

"See you at three, good luck!"
