Four year old Holger Sauer leaves his home in East Berlin for a three-day trip to West Berlin with his father. Before he leaves, he kisses both his mother and sister goodbye, waving until their frames disappear into the distance.


East German forces construct a wall between East and West Berlin, cutting off all traffic and bringing the city to a standstill. Nobody is allowed to cross back into the East, and nobody from the East is allowed to cross into the West.


Thirty-one year old Holger Sauer leaves his home in West Berlin for work. Before he leaves, he kisses both his wife and daughter goodbye, waving until their frames disappear into the distance.

He hasn't seen or heard from his mother or sister in over twenty-seven years.
