The Things That You Do

01: She Could Use A Friend

Staring up at the ceiling, Alexa allowed her eyes to trace patterns in the plaster, trying to ignore the stinging which existed at the corners of them. It wasn’t the first time she had cried, since the doctors had confirmed that her father had passed away a few days previous, she was sure that she had spent more time crying than not, but she wanted to stave off the tears, even if she knew that she wouldn’t be able to stop them in a couple of hours. She wanted to compose herself slightly before she started to get herself ready.

Tracing another path across the ceiling, she gently wiped her eyes before she spotted the door opening out of the corner of her eye, something which caused her to lower her stare, watching as her older brother stepped into the room, a sad smile on his lips. “I’m not interrupting, am I?” he posed gently “I mean, I just came up to check on you, but I can go if you want me too. Do you mind me staying?” he added, hesitating at the end of her bed.

Alexa looked up at him briefly before she shook her head, not saying a word.

Marco sat down on the side of the bed before he hesitantly reached over, rubbing her back gently. “Forgive me for asking this. I know it’s a stupid question” he mumbled “But are you doing OK?” he added.

Alexa snorted. “You’re right” she mumbled “It is a stupid question” she added.

Marco let out a soft laugh before he nodded. “It is” he agreed “But I’d still like an answer. Mama’s worried about you” he added.

Alexa allowed his words to hang around them for a few seconds before she turned over onto her side, her tearful blue eyes looking up at him. “I miss him” she murmured, sniffling.

“I know you do” Marco mused “We all do” he added, squeezing her hand comfortingly.

Alexa glanced down at their hands for a second before she shook her head, letting out another soft sniffle. “I have to go today?” she asked quietly.

Marco nodded. “Mama needs us both there” he mused “She’s struggling, Alexa, and she needs us with her” he added.

Alexa merely nodded her head, something which made Marco squeeze her hand once more before he pushed himself back up to his feet. “We leave in an hour” he mused “Do you think that you can be ready by then?” he added.

Alexa simply nodded, something which made Marco sigh before he reached over, offering her a tight hug. “I know that you’re hurting” he muttered quietly “We all are, but if you need anything, you tell me, OK? I will do whatever I can to make sure that you get through today as best you can” he insisted. He knew that there was very little he could do, the loss of their father wasn’t something which was going to be soothed by a few words or a couple of comforting hugs, but still he wanted his little sister to know that he was there for her, even if he knew that it wasn’t likely to make her feel any better. He wanted her to know that he was around.

Alexa held onto him tightly for a second, sniffling a little into his shoulder, before she pulled away, wiping her eyes. “How long before we have to go?” she asked.

“An hour” Marco replied “You going to be ready?” he asked.

Alexa nodded her gently. “I should think so” she mused before she stepped passed him, heading towards the bathroom which stood across the hall.

Marco watched after her for a second before he let out a soft sigh, hoping that Alexa could get through the day which stood ahead of them.

Neatly adjusting the knot of his tie, Lionel moved to place his hands in his pockets, his dark eyes staring up at the church which stood ahead of him, a steady stream of people making their way inside.

It had been a sudden decision, when he had received a call from Alexa’s brother a few days previous telling him that Antonio, Alexa’s father, had passed away, he had been slightly indecisive in declaring whether or not he would be able to make it, but he opted to go, even if things between him and Alexa had been awkward for a few months, he knew that she was going to need someone that day. It had been awkward between them for months, after he had returned from his summer in Argentina, he had seen less and less of Alexa, but he hadn’t pushed the issue with her, even if he had been tempted to more than once. He knew that she had a habit of being too stubborn for her own good.

Fiddling with the lining of his pocket, he briefly contemplated getting back into his car, before he shook his head, taking a couple of steps up the path.

“You made it”

Lionel stopped walking at the sound of Marco’s voice before he turned, offering him a sympathetic smile. “I’m sorry for your loss” he mused.

Marco returned his smile feebly. “Thanks” he mumbled “I am a little surprised to see you, though. You didn’t sound too sure on the phone” he added, trying to change the subject swiftly.

Lionel shifted his feet slightly before he shrugged sheepishly, causing Marco to let out a small laugh. “I’m glad that you made it” he noted “She’d never say it, but I am sure that Alexa could use a friend right now, and with Poppy out of town, I thought you’d be the next best thing” he added.

Lionel forced a small smile, not wanting to correct Marco about what was going on between him and Alexa. “How is Alexa?” he posed gently.

“She’s struggling” Marco replied “It’s hit her pretty hard” he added.

Lionel nodded his head gently before the sound of someone calling Marco’s name reached the two of them, causing the taller man to quirk a small sheepish smile. “I should get back to my mother” he noted “Gracias for coming, Leo” he added before he padded away, quickly making his way back towards his mother.

Lionel watched him go for a second before he turned, staring up at the church.

Lionel jumped at the sound of his name before he turned back around, his dark eyes settling on Alexa who stood a little away from him, her blue eyes wide and tearful. “Wh...what are you doing here?” she stumbled out.

“Marco called me” Lionel replied “He told me what happened. I’m so sorry, Alexa” he added softly.

Alexa stared at him for a second before she shook her head, a small sniffle falling out of her mouth, a sound which encouraged Lionel to step forwards, wrapping her in a tight hug that she returned without a moment of hesitation.
