In Retrospect

There was a lot I wish I could’ve told my mother. Goodbye was one, that I was gay was another.

In fairness, I never knew it at the time. There had been an inkling, as well as outside speculation—there was all those ‘gay bands’ and a less than platonic admiration for Dave Gahan, Sophia would later tell me—but I had never been sure. With the internet, it seemed like every teen and their dog had some sort of label for what they felt before they were old enough to do their taxes. All very well and good, and all the power to them, but I wasn’t on the same wavelength.
