Just Business

This was probably one of the worst hangovers I think I ever had. As soon as I sat up, I felt the left side of my head start pounding.

“Shit..” I mumbled.

I looked at myself in the mirror and my hair was all over the place and my lipstick had been smeared down to my chin. I was the definition of a hot mess.

My phone buzzed with a text, it was from Henry.

Hey, I’m glad you called me last night. Listen, I know you probably are super hungover this morning and I don’t know if you really would have called me, but I do want to see you again. Call me if you want to have dinner or something.

I go onto the bathroom and shower trying to piece last night together. I called Henry and he brought me home I know that, but what I said is the real question.

I got out the shower and got dressed Aria was in the kitchen waiting for the coffee to finish.

“What a night.” She said.

I huffed and got my coffee cup ready. “You’re telling me.”

“So, Helen brought a boy home.” She said wiggling her eye-brows. I laughed and shook my head as I popped a k-cup into the coffee pot.

Helen deserved it, she’s never had anyone serious enough for her to stick around and maybe this would work. Her bedroom door creaked open and she popped out wrapped in a blanket and the guy behind her, their hands together.

“Morning ladies.” He said politely.

We waved and smiled as she opened the door and went out into the hallway with him closing the door behind her.

“He’s staying.” Aria said.

I nodded in agreement. “So, I called Henry last night.”

“What happened?” She asked.

“He walked me home, I don’t remember much, I was still drunk. But, he texted me this morning. He wants to talk at some point.”

She smiles. “Listen, I know things were rough between you two, but you can’t just avoid him forever. Just, at least try. He adores you and you know it.”

It was true, he does and he always will. Nothing was ever going to change that.

Helen came in with that smile on her face like she had won the best prize at the carnival.

“So?” I pried. “I want to know about this mystery man that shared your bed with you last night.”

She sat down and I passed her a cup of coffee. “His name is Jason. He’s twenty six..”

“Oh, an older man! I love it! Tell us more.” Aria said with excitement.

She rolled her eyes. “He’s from New York and he’s an artist and musician. He owns an art studio downtown.”

“He seems like he has a gentle touch to him. He seems sweet.” I said with a smile.

I went into my room and got dressed and headed down to Max’s apartment. I was getting him out of that house today no matter what it took.

Max was sitting at his table with his computer in front of him. He looked up and smiled.
“Hey, what are you doing here today?” he asked.

“I needed to get away, I had a rough night.” I said.

“Do I even want to ask?” He said cracking a smile.

I shook my head no. “Absolutely not.”
He looked down at his computer again and began typing. I watched him his blue eyes were fixated on the screen.

“Hey Max?” I said leaning against the counter propping my arm under my chin.

“What’s up?”

“Can we do something today?” I asked.

“Like what?”

“I don’t know anything I guess.”

He looked at me again. “I have a lot of work to do Eloise.”

I frowned a little. This is why Max doesn’t do well with other people. He needs to be more social and socialize with others, of course I wasn’t going to tell him that to his face but if I was going to be around, he needed to get used to doing other things besides work.

“Come on Max please?” I begged. “It’s Saturday, and it’s beautiful outside.”

I began to stick out my bottom lip and pout a little which caused him to smile.

“Alright fine, I’m going to go shower and you figure out what you want to do.”

He got up and went into the bathroom closing the door behind him. I opened the fridge pulling out the cold cuts and peanut butter and jelly, fruits, veggies and some cold waters. I made a couple of sandwiches and a fruit salad and some carrot and celery sticks and put them in some sandwich bags.
After a few minutes, he came out dressed and stared at me curiously.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“We’re going on a picnic.” I said with a big smile.

He flashed that half grin that probably made all the girls weak in the knees, mine included.

“Oh, really. I’ve never done this before.”

“I need you to get a large blanket that we can sit on and something we can put this stuff in please.”

He went into the closet and pulled out a large throw blanket and basket. He brought them over and set them over on the counter in front of me and I began to put everything inside.
We drove down to the park and we walked a little before setting down the blanket onto the ground. I put the basket down and I sat next to him.

“This feels weird.” He admitted.

“I raised an eyebrow.” Why weird?”

“I’ve just never done this before, I’ve always been a home body.”

It’s sad, knowing you have all of these privileges and you’ve never once in your life have done something like this. I didn’t want to make him feel bad.

“Isn’t it nice? It’s beautiful out. The heat and look at the boats out on the bay.” I pointed.

He smiled. “Yeah, it’s really nice.”

I laid down and closed my eyes and felt the warmth on my skin. I sighed and relaxed and I felt max lay down. He was propped up with arm under his head.

“Tell me about you.” I said looking at him.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Like, tell me about you. Where you came from, More about your family.” I said.

He smiled. “That’s a boring story.”

I huffed. “We’ll see.”

“Alright fine, My full name is Maxwell James Bennett. I was born on December 5th, 1991. I’m twenty-six I have three siblings, two older brothers and a younger sister.”

“What are their names?” I asked.

“John Jacob and Seline.”

“Tell me about them?”

“They’re a pain in my ass most of the time. Seline keeps my head on my shoulders, or at least she tries to.” He grinned.

He began to talk about his brothers and said that they were very competitive when it came to pretty much everything. Sports, work you name it. But then he stopped, he was just so eager to change to change the subject.

It’s like he just shut me out completely but I didn’t want to push him further.

“So I’m going home next weekend, to Texas.” I said.

“Oh?” he looked at me.

I nodded. “My brother decided to have his engagement party back home, because my mom can’t fly.”

“How come?” He asked.

I gave a small smile. “Just some medical stuff. When is your next event?”

I had to change the subject quick, I didn't wan't him knowing anything or to ask about it.

“Not too sure, I will let you know as soon as I do.”

I just laid there and soaked in the sun. I looked over at Max he was looking at me and smiled.

“Thank you.” He said.

“For what?”

“For making me come out today. I needed this.”

I smiled. “Anytime, let’s do it again.”
