What She Found

Chapter 20

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18 - 10:00AM

Maya's eyes flickered open, her whole body aching. She looked around the room, her eyes falling on Reese, who was staring out the window.

"Hey," she whispered.

He turned, his face ashen. "Oh god." He walked over to her and pressed his mouth against hers. "You're awake. I thought—Jesus, are you okay?"

"What happened?"

"We were waiting for Mason Bowsell." Reese ran his hands down his face. "You were coming toward me, I don't know why, and the car hit you."

"Who—"

"We're looking into it, but I'm assuming it was Boswell. Hayden's freaking out. She was here before, by the way. She wanted to know how you were doing."

"Where is she now?" Maya asked.

"I sent her away," Reese admitted.

Maya didn't say anything. Instead, she focused on the beeping and the wires and the way her body protested every time she breathed.

"We're close," she told him. "I understand that now. It's why he's trying to stop anyone who is close to Hayden."

"He hasn't stopped me yet," Reese said confidently. He touched the gun at his side. "And he won't. I will stop him first. For everything he's done."
