What She Found

Chapter 21

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19 - 2:00AM

Hayden drummed her fingers on the counter. She hadn't slept in two days, because she was too busy replaying her conversation with Reese.

He was scared.

But so was she.

"What are you doing up? It's the middle of the night."

Hunter's voice made her jump. She glanced around the dark kitchen, and saw his shadow near the fridge. He opened it, the light spilling out, grabbed a bottle of water, and sat down. He cracked off the top and took a sip.

"I didn't realize how late it was," Hayden lied, gripping her coffee mug. "I just have a lot on my mind."

"Everything will be okay," Hunter murmured, pressing his lips to her hair. "You'll stay here for as long as you need, and I'll get someone to cover your shift at the office."

"You don't have anyone else," Hayden told him.

"I can hire a temp," he replied. "Come on, let's get to bed. You must be exhausted."

She nodded, dumped her coffee down the drain, and let him lead her to the bedroom. His hands gripped her hips as he backed her against the mattress.

"You'll be okay," he assured her, his mouth hot on her skin.

"Okay," she said, and closed her eyes.
