What She Found

Reese looked at his phone, inclined his head at Maya, and said, "How long does it take to find a card? She's been gone a while."

Maya nodded and stood. "I'll go check on her."

When she was gone, Reese scrolled through his phone. He'd had several messages from Maya and Hayden. But his most recent one came in right after Maya stepped out of his office.

It was two words, but it sent a panic through Reese.

I win.

He rushed out the door as Maya was coming back inside, her face pale.

"Hayden's gone," she said. "Her car is still there, and I found this on the ground."

She handed Reese the sympathy card, and he crumbled it a bit in his fist. His eyes narrowed and he looked around.

"I know. Mason texted me."

Maya's eyes widened. "You're kidding me. You knew he was going to take her?"

"Not until after you left. He's watching us," he snarled. "And we have no fucking clue where he's taken her." He shut his eyes. "We failed her."
