What She Found
Chapter 42
MONDAY, DECEMBER 24 - 5:00PM
The warehouse was cold and damp. A chill ran through Hayden, as she sat, bound, her arms stiff behind her back. She watched Mason carefully; he was sitting at a small table in the center of the building, writing.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
He glanced at her. "I'm writing Reese a letter. I got tired of texting. Besides, this feels more personal." He stood and came toward her and crouched down. He shoved the envelope at her. "You are going give this to him, Hayden, or I'm going to hurt you."
She nodded, as he pulled out a box cutter from his back pocket, and cut the ties. She was able to move her arms again. She thought about hitting him, but decided better. He was quick, he could have stabbed her.
"Okay," she agreed.
"I want money. Any money will do now. And I want your detective to get it for me. But you're going to help him. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"Good." He withdrew his phone and dialed a number. When a muffled voice answered, he said, "Detective Danvers, I have someone here who wants to talk to you."
He passed the phone to Hayden. She took it, pressed it to her ear, and shut her eyes. "Reese.."
"Hayden," his voice was shaking. "Jesus, are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm fine," she muttered. "But he wants me to give something to you. He wants us to help him get his money."
"What if we don't?" he asked.
She opened her eyes. Mason smirked.
"Then I'm going to die," she whispered.
