SHORT FILM TO BE PRODUCED

Dancing in the Rain

EXT. ROCKPORT HOUSE - RAINY DAY

Establishing shot of house in Rockport, MA.

INT. HOUSE - RAINY DAY
SADIE and AMBER play a board game in their small bedroom.

MOTHER (voice)
How do you expect me to keep food on our kids plates?

FATHER (voice)
Helen, I can’t control it. I told you they just don’t
have enough money to pay me anymore.

Ignoring the conversation, AMBER moves a PLAYING PIECE.

AMBER
Your move.

SADIE, affected by the conversation, moves to look at the rain out the window.

MOTHER (voice)
So what? You’re just gonna sit around all day while the family suffers?

FATHER (voice)
No!

SADIE
When are they gonna stop fighting?

FATHER (voice)
I’ll find a new job as soon as I can.

AMBER
I don’t know, Sadie.

MOTHER (voice)
But will it be soon enough, Eric?

AMBER
I know what’ll cheer you up. A trip to the candy shop: your favorite!

MOTHER (voice)
I can only hold the family up for so long. You can’t let me down.

SADIE
But it’s raining out.

AMBER thinks of what to say to cheer up SADIE.

FATHER (voice)
It’s not my choice, Helen! So stop acting like it is!

MOTHER (voice)
Well...

AMBER
Have you ever heard of Vivian Greene?

SADIE
No?

FATHER (voice)
“Well” what?

AMBER
Well, she’s famous for her quote: Life isn’t about
waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

SADIE
What is that supposed to mean?

MOTHER (voice)
Well you better figure something out!

AMBER
(Smiling)
Come on, let’s go!

Sounds of DOORS SLAMMING and YELLING as they prepare to leave and camera fades.

EXT. ROCKPORT STREET - RAINY DAY

AMBER and SADIE hold hands as the walk down the street. AMBER is holding an umbrella. They walk silently for a while; they’re both thinking.

SADIE
Amber?

AMBER
Yes?

SADIE
Why do mommy and daddy yell so much?

AMBER pauses to think about the question.

AMBER
I don’t know.

SADIE
Are they going to stop?

AMBER
(Annoyed)
I don’t know, Sadie. (Pause, no longer annoyed) I know
it’s hard. Remember what I was saying earlier? We can’t just sit around in a gloomy state until mom and dad stop fighting - if they stop fighting.

AMBER pauses walking as they near the CANDY STORE and SADIE follows her lead. AMBER kneels to SADIE’s height, preparing to tell her something important.

AMBER
What I’m trying to say is, even though it’s hard for
us, we have to try to enjoy ourselves. Finding the best in the sad times; it’s like dancing in the rain.

SADIE smiles, understanding that AMBER is trying to cheer her up. SADIE’s smile then spreads to AMBER, who smiles as well. AMBER throws the UMBRELLA aside and they begin to physically dance in the rain together. They are both in a happy state.

SADIE
Race ya to the candy store!

The two girls happily run to the store, giggling.
