Too Scared to Love Again

Chapter 24

“Fuck you!” Jimmy snarled at Johnny, who had just won another round in Call of Duty. The bassist was sniggering like a manic, meanwhile the drummer jumped up and down, obviously furious about losing to Johnny.

“So, why are you guys hiding out here again?” Matt asked Blair and Cynthia, who had drove out to Zack early that day.

“Because we’re making Lynn deal with her shit!” the blonde explained.

“Okay, so you’re really just hiding from Lynn?” Val asked, Matt’s arm hanging loosely around her shoulders.

“Well… not exactly! We’ve made the best soldier take this battle.” Blair sniggered, just as Zack sat down and allowed the ginger-haired woman to snuggle into his side.

“And that is?” Val raised her eyebrows, twirling a stray of blonde hair around her index finger.

“Brian.”

Zack nearly choked on his beer, before he looked over at Cynthia. “How did you guys do that? Brian’s been scared to death after Lynn flipped out on him.”

“Well, we weren’t exactly the ones that told him to see her…” Blair whimpered.

“God… what have you done?” Zack rubbed his forehead using his fingers.

“And more importantly, is it legal?” Johnny added.

“You know I asked you to borrow your phone?” Blair asked, looking over at her boyfriend, who instantly turned pale in the face.

“Oh, God…” Matt shook his head.

“Are you girls insane?” Jimmy turned around and looked at them.

“We had to do something!” Cynthia insisted.

“What exactly did you tell Bri?” Val asked, genuinely curious.

“We told him that Zack had been invited over to hang out with us, and that he should pick up some ice-cream on the way.”

“I’m actually… really impressed.” Valary said.

“And fucking terrified!” her husband added, staring wickedly at his wife.

“At least ya’ll are clever!” Jimmy told them.

“Thanks, hon!” Cynthia winked playfully at the man, meanwhile Zack shook his head.

“If this works…” Zack said underneath his breath. “I’ll be fucking shocked.”

“Of course it won’t work!” Matt howled.

“Oh, stop it!” Val smacked the back of his head. “I believe in you, girls!”

“Damned it, Baker!” Brian hissed under his breath, as he reached Zack’s voicemail for the third time that evening.

The guitarist grabbed his car keys and then stuffed them into the pocket of his jeans. He then snatched the bag carrying the boxes of ice cream that he had been asked to pick up and then climbed out of his car. His dark eyes were covered with a pair of sunglasses, and he was dressed in a black leather-jacket and a pair of faded torn jeans.

He whistled along to a song he’d been listening to in the car, as he made his way up towards the apartment he’d visited a couple of times by now. Brian had been told that Zack were already there, probably hanging out with Blair and that he was waiting for the other guitarist to come.

His tattooed finger soon hit the doorbell, waiting rather impatiently as he heard gentle footsteps from the other side of the door.

Lynn was rather surprised as the doorbell chimed through her apartment. Blair and Cynthia had left hours ago, saying something that they were doing a favour for Donna down at the bar. The brunette grabbed her bath rob and then skipped down the hall in order to reach the door.

As she opened the door, she couldn’t help but frown her eyes as she saw Brian on the other end, the man looking as though this was were he was supposed to be.

“What are you doing here?” Lynn cocked her eyebrows at him, looking just as unimpressed as she had done the first time he came into her bar.

“Zack invited me over,” Brian stated, looking somewhat confused. “He said that Blair and Cynthia wanted to hang out at your place.”

“Well, they’re not here.” she told him.

“Look, I’m not here to bother you,” he told her. “I was told to come over with this fucking butter pecan ice-cream because Blair’s on her period.”

“Blair’s been on the pill lately, and Cynthia can’t stand butter pecan.” Lynn pointed out.

“Oh, yeah? Why would they make me buy it then? It’s fucking impossible to get a hold of this shit.” Brian replied, sounding somewhat annoyed.

“Because that’s my comfort food,” the brunette sighed. “God, I hate them!” Lynn groaned underneath her breath.

Brian narrowed his eyes at her for a moment, realizing that the requests from Zack did sound a little weird, especially considering the fact that he knew that Lynn wasn’t pleased with him at the moment, and he therefore doubted that her roommates would invite him over during this cold war.

“Did they… play me?” Brian asked, already aware of the answer as Lynn nodded.

“I’m gonna kill them…” she mumbled underneath her breath.

“Okay, look, this is obviously their way of saying that we should talk.”

“Not happening,” Lynn argued. “I don’t want you here, Brian.”

“Lynn, come on. This cold war has been going on for a long time now, and I still don’t know what you think I saw that night or what I know.” Brian told her.

“And why should I believe that?” she cocked her eyebrows at him.

“Why would I lie about something like that?” he argued back, somewhat offended by her accusation.
“Because people lie all the fucking time! I have no reason to believe you!”

“Is that because you think I’ve been pretending to be nice all the time?” Brian asked her.

“Of course you have!” Lynn half-snapped.

“Jesus fuck, Lynn! Does it ever occur to you that a guy can be nice?” Brian raised his voice, and then rubbed his fingers into his temple afterwards.

“No!” Lynn admitted. “Look, Brian, I don’t wanna talk to you. Please leave.”

“I’m not gonna leave until you tell me the whole story, because I don’t understand where this fucking anger comes from.”

“Brian, get out.”

“Not happening.” Brian argued back.

“I’m not playing!” Lynn insisted.

“I’m not either!”

“Okay, if you won’t go, then I’ll go.” Lynn was just about to turn around and snatch her key from the wall, as she noticed that they were all gone.

“Take a fucking hint, Evans.” Brian chuckled under his breath, rolling his eyes at her.

“Shut up!” Lynn hissed. “Where the fuck are my keys?”

“I think you know the answer to that already.” Brian shook his head.

“I’m gonna murder them.” Lynn announced underneath her breath.

“But before you do that, I think we ought to talk.” he stated.

“Bri-” Lynn was just about to argue back when Brian decided to cut her off.

“Just stop! I have no idea why you’re locking yourself in like this. We were just starting to get along and then you suddenly decided to go all ape-shit on me!”

Lynn pressed her lips together, making her lips appear into a thin line. The brunette then pinched the bridge of her nose, obviously frustrated.

“Hand over the ice cream, Haner.” Lynn sighed.

“What?” Brian stuttered.

“I guess we shouldn’t waste all this ice-cream,” she shrugged. “Besides. You won’t stop until we talk, right?”

“Absolutely not.” Brian sniggered.

“Fuck you.” the brunette groaned and then snatched the ice-cream from the dark-haired guitarist.

Lynn buried her spoon into her ice-cream, crossing her legs in the couch and feeling his gaze rest on her figure. Brian was settled in the arm chair, his ankle resting on top of his thigh, meanwhile his long fingers were hooked around his leg, holding the position.

“Lynn, what’s going on?” Brian voiced rather softly at her.

“You met Gerard.” Lynn mumbled.

“Yeah, and I have no idea who he is.”

“You don’t?” Lynn cocked her eyebrows. “At all?”

“Well, Rebecca told me that he was the cousin of your former fiancée.” Brian sighed.

“So you did know something about him?”

“Lynn… the guy sat down next to me and started talking.”

“What did he say?” Lynn asked.

“He told me that… you were a loose canon,” Brian swallowed after that. “And then Rebecca got him removed.”

“And nothing else?”

“Nothing else. I tried to ask him about stuff, but he wouldn’t answer.”

“What did you ask him about?”

“Lynn…” Brian sighed.

“You were the one who wanted to talk!” she reminded him.

“I tried to ask him why his cousin is your former fiancée.”

Lynn looked over at Brian for a long time, not quite sure how to react. She had mentioned a long time ago that she’d been engaged once, and Brian had then decided to not ask further questions. The fact that he had been hunting for answers through Gerard made her somewhat hurt, as she had been genuinely convinced that Brian wanted to respect her past.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked him about that. It’s none of my business.” Brian uttered, knowing that it was a stupid thing to do.

“No, it isn’t,” Lynn agreed sternly. “Why would you do that?” she sighed.

“I was curious and the guy was pissing me off by the way he talked about you. I’m sorry, that was a dick move of me.”

“Yeah, it was,” Lynn rubbed her temple with her fingernails. “You’ve never asked me about that before.”

“I thought it was a sensitive spot.” Brian admitted.

“Yeah, it is. Why would you go and ask Gerard?”

“I don’t know,” he sighed, realizing what a big mistake it had been. “Fuck, I’m so sorry.”

Lynn nodded slowly, soon looking down at the spoon that had been left inside the melting ice-cream. She turned her spoon in her box, and then brought it up to her mouth, trying to comfort herself by tasting the pecan taste.

“Jesus, I’m an ass.” Brian shook his head.

“Yeah, kinda.” Lynn agreed.

“God… why haven’t you slapped me yet?” he asked, his hands holding up his face.

“Finally asking the real questions.” Lynn chuckled at him, the sound taking him aback as he looked at her.

“Did you just…. laugh?”

“I guess I did,” Lynn shrugged. “That doesn’t mean we’re cool though. You’re still an ass, but at least you’re aware of the fact that you are one.”

“So, there’s a possibility you won’t hate me forever?” Brian asked.

“Well, if I’m gonna murder Cynthia and Blair, I need to drink beer with someone else.” Lynn announced.
“Did you just confess that you wanna drink beer with me in the future?”

“Oh, come on, Haner! Are you seriously this slow when you’re hitting up at girls on the road?” Lynn wiggled her eyebrows at him. “I can’t say I’m not offended by how you acted when you met Gerard, but you have convinced me that you really have no idea what went down between his cousin and I.”

“I didn’t. I promise.”
“Just shut up and grab me a beer from the fridge.” Lynn groaned.

Brian couldn’t help but chuckle, as he got up to his feet and shook his head a little while padding towards the kitchen.

“You got it, ma’am!”
