Love Is Love

Seven

Lola didn't see Jay much over the next few weeks, but the time they did spend together was good and they were happy. Taking the dirty plates into the kitchen at Hal's, she returned to the bar and rolled her eyes when she found Sabrina waiting for her.

"You said no," she stated, continuing the conversation they had been having earlier in the shift, "He asked you to go with him to a work function, where you could meet his friends and you rejected him."

"I did not reject him," Lola argued as she poured a round of drinks, "I just told him that I wasn't sure..."

"Yeah, you basically rejected him," Sabrina replied bluntly, "Why wouldn't you want to take that step?"

"I... I don't want to embarrass him," Lola admitted with a shrug, "He's this amazing guy, who dedicates his life to protecting others and I'm just a waitress."

"Obviously that's not all that Jay sees and I'm sure that his friends will see more than that too," Sabrina told her, "All I'm saying is that you shouldn't make decisions based on what you think will happen."

"I know," Lola mumbled, taking the drinks over to her table with a smile.

Spotting Jay as he arrived for his lunch, Lola noticed straight away that he wasn't alone and took a deep breath as she made her way over to where he was standing.

"Hey," Jay greeted, giving her a quick hug and kissing her cheek, "This is my partner, Gavin... Gavin, this is my girlfriend Lola."

"It's nice to actually be able to put a face to the name," Gavin said with a grin, "We were beginning to think that Jay had made you up."

"It's nice to meet you too."

Chuckling, Lola led both men over to Jay's usual table and handed Gavin a menu. Already knowing what Jay wanted, she took Gavin's order and dropped it into the kitchen before making their drinks at the counter.

Returning to the table, she set the drinks down and smiled as both men thanked her. Hearing the sound of someone complaining loudly about their food, Lola sighed and made her way over to hopefully defuse the situation.

"I told you that I didn't want onion and yet, this burger obviously has onion on it," the man was saying as Lola approached them.

"Is there a problem?" She asked politely.

"Are you the manager?"

"No, but I am the senior waitress on duty..." Lola explained.

"Well, I ordered my burger with no onions and there're onions, plus my coffee is cold."

"That's easily fixed," Lola stated, turning to the waitress and seeing the shimmer of unshed tears in her eyes, "Take the food back to the kitchen, ask the team to make this gentleman another burger with no onions and bring him a fresh coffee on the house."

"Is that all you're going to do?" The man inquired, looking at Lola incredulously and causing her to frown.

"She's new and she made a mistake, it happens to the best of us," Lola replied, "The mistake has been rectified and she will learn from it, please enjoy your meal."

Heading over to make sure that Ella was okay, Lola collected Jay and Gavin's orders from the counter before leaving the kitchen.

"Everything okay?" Jay asked as Lola handed him his lunch.

"Yeah, just a customer complaining," Lola told him, "I can't wait for my shift to be over, are you coming to mine once you've finished tonight?"

"That was my plan," Jay said, "I was thinking that maybe we could go camping this weekend if you're not working that is?"

"Camping sounds great," Lola agreed, making a decision and continuing, "I'm also available for that work thing you invited me to."

"Great."

Getting back to work, she busted her tables for another four hours and was glad when she was finally able to head home.
