My father ran some very lucrative business operations over his life.
As far as I can tell those operations were adhering to the word of the law, ignorning the intent of the law, and often in legal gray areas.
For example, during the Soviet Union there was a techonology embargo on the import of plotter technology.
A plotter is type of printer that was back then much better at creating images made of lines (aka vector graphics).
Plotters are great at drawing shapes with lines since they move a pen freely over the paper.
My father set up multiple businesses to do the following:
1. Take plotters apart in the West
2. Transport the individual parts to third countries that were allowed to import them
3. From there import the parts into the Soviet Union
4. Reassemble the plotters
5. Sell the plotters to the Russians which then investigated and copied the technology
I don't know if it was part of this particular enterprise, but since my father never spoke Russian he needed a tranlator and by that got to know my mother.
