I Know I Was for a While

40: You're Not So Bad Yourself

Lightly tracing his fingertip up and down Camila’s side, Lionel quirked a sleepy smile to himself, his dark eyes trained on her face as she made a soft sound in her sleep. It was early, when Lionel had checked the clock when he’d gotten up with Oscar, it had been a little past four in the morning, but despite the fact that he had been back in bed for a little over half an hour, he hadn’t quite been able to fall back to sleep, something which had led to him watching Camila, enjoying the quiet which filled the bedroom.

It had been a little while, after they’d paid a visit to his parents in Argentina, they’d hung around for a couple of days before they’d returned to Barcelona, but with Lionel having some time before he was due to report for the start of preseason training, they’d quickly booked themselves a holiday, wanting to make the most of the time that they had to themselves before Lionel found himself wrapped up in the new season.

Smiling tiredly to himself, he allowed his fingers to brush against the warm skin exposed by the bottom of Camila’s pajama shirt before he cuddled a little closer to his pillow, his arm gently looping around her waist. Shuffling towards her slightly, he pressed a light kiss against the back of her neck, something which caused Camila stir a little before she peeked an eye open, a sleepy half smile tugging at the corner of her lips. Lionel marveled at the smile for a second before he gently shook his head, his expression growing a little sheepish. “Lo siento” he mumbled “It’s still early. Go back to sleep” he added.

Camila, who’d moved to brush a few loose hairs behind her ear, shook her head. “Why are you awake?” she asked through a yawn.

“Oscar woke me up about half an hour ago” Lionel replied “I got him to go back to sleep pretty quickly, but I’ve not been able to get back to sleep. I didn’t mean to wake you, Mila” he added apologetically.

Camila allowed another sleepy smile to spread across her lips before she gently lifted her hand, pushing her fingers back through his dark hair. “It’s OK” she mused “It’s not the first time one of us has disturbed the other when we get up to check on Oscar. I’m sure that I can forgive you for it” she added warmly.

Lionel rolled his eyes gently before he reached his hand up, capturing hers before he pulled it to his lips, allowing him to press a kiss against the back of it before he turned it over, kissing her palm softly. Camila watched him, a soft yawn falling out of her mouth, before she shook her head, a tired smile lighting up her features. “Are you sure that we can’t just stay here?” she asked, disturbing the comfortable silence which had settled over the two of them.

Lionel, who’d been brushing his thumb over the back of her hand lazily as he stared up at the ceiling, turned to look at her as she spoke before he quirked a small smile. “You don’t miss home?” he quipped.

Camila mulled his question over for a second before she offered him a non-committal shrug, something which made Lionel laugh gently before he pulled her hand against his lips once more, allowing him to press a couple of soft kisses against her palm. “I think I probably have to go back” he mused “But you and Oscar can stay here if you want. I mean, I’d miss you but...” he trailed off, flashing her a soft smile.

Camila looked up at him, admiring the soft smile that he wore on his face, before she shook her head, cuddling into his side. “I guess we can come back with you” she mumbled.

Lionel let out another soft laugh before he leant over, pressing a tender kiss against her forehead. “You really don’t want to get home?” he mumbled softly “I mean, don’t get me wrong, this has been wonderful, but aren’t you at least a little excited to get back to normal?” he added, his fingertips gently brushing over her skin as they dipped beneath the hem of her t-shirt.

Camila was quiet for a moment, relishing his featherlike touch against her skin, before she shrugged, gently entwining her legs with his. “I like this” she mumbled “When it’s just the three of us, it’s wonderful and simple, but when we get home, I’m probably going to have to spend more time with Isabel and Victor, and that’s not something I am looking forwards to. I know it’s the right thing to do, I know they’re Oscar’s grandparents, and I know I should be happy that they want to be around, even when Noah made it clear that he didn’t, but I still dread it, Leo” she added, gently looking up at him.

Lionel looked at her for a second, his dark eyes searching hers, before he gently lifted his hand, tenderly brushing a few messy hairs off of her face. “I know you do” he mumbled “But you said it yourself, it’s the right thing to do. They want to know their grandson, and who could blame them for that? You’ve got an adorable little boy, Mila, and you should be proud of that” he added, trying to shift the topic to something happier.

He knew that it was something which bothered her still, even despite numerous visits with Isabel and Victor, Camila still seemed awkward whenever their names came up in conversation, and he knew that it wasn’t likely to change for a while, even if he didn’t like seeing Camila work herself up. He knew that the relationship between her and Noah’s parents wasn’t something he could help to improve.

Camila’s slightly pensive expression brightened at the mention of Oscar, something which made Lionel smile too before he leant forwards, lightly brushing a kiss over her forehead. Camila cuddled a closer to him, holding him close for a few seconds, before she lifted her head again, her dark eyes searching his face as he started to blink tiredly. “Leo?” she asked.

“Hm?” Lionel hummed tiredly, his dark eyes flashing up to hers.

Camila smiled at the sleepy tone of his voice before she shook her head. “It’ll keep” she mused “You should get some sleep” she added.

Lionel offered her a dubious look. “What is it?” he asked.

Camila shook her head, her cheeks warming. “It’s just me being sentimental” she muttered.

Lionel quirked an eyebrow, a tired half smile on his face. “Are you going to tell me how great a boyfriend I am?” he asked, his voice only half teasing.

Camila scoffed, but didn’t deny it, something which made Lionel’s sleepy smile grow a little before he turned, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead and her nose before he met her lips. “You’re not so bad yourself” he quipped impishly before he mumbled a soft goodnight, moving to curl up against his pillow, falling asleep almost instantly.

Camila watched him quietly for a few minutes, listening as his breathing evened out, before she gently shook her head to herself, unable to shake to sleepy smile which he’d left on her face.
