I Know I Was for a While

55: That Little Bump

Pressing a soft kiss against Oscar’s head, Camila quirked a small smile against his skin, mumbling a soft goodnight to him as she carefully lowered him down into his crib. It had taken a while, with his bedtime having passed whilst they were at the stadium, the little boy had been grumpier than usual when she’d tried to get him ready for bed, but Camila hadn’t minded, even if she had started to feel a little tired herself throughout the duration of the match. She was still a little giddy about the idea that Oscar had said his first word.

It had been coming, with his first birthday only a couple of months away, she had anticipated that his first words and first steps would happen sooner or later, but still it had been a wonderful moment, even if it had caught her momentarily off guard. She couldn’t quite believe that her little boy was already talking.

Gently settling him down against his mattress, she stood quietly for a few seconds, watching as he stirred in his sleep, before she took a couple of steps backwards, quietly ducking out of the bedroom. Pulling the door to behind her, she ducked across the hallway before she nudged her own bedroom door open, her dark eyes settling on Lionel who was sat at the foot of their bed, pulling his socks off of his feet.

Quirking a small smile, she watched him quietly for a moment before she cleared her throat, something which caused him to whip his head up, a soft smile quickly spreading across his face. “He’s finally asleep?” he quipped as he stood up, moving to place his socks in the laundry basket.

Camila, who’d moved to collect a clean seat of pajama shorts from her dresser, nodded gently. “Yeah” she confirmed “I mean, he was pretty grumpy, but I think he was overtired. We’re back home pretty late” she pointed out as she spared him a brief look, a playful smirk playing at the corner of her mouth.

“You chose the game tonight” Lionel pointed out, playing along “Maybe next time, we can pick one with an afternoon kickoff” he added.

Camila quirked an amused smile, briefly contemplating offer him a teasing comment in return, before she nodded her head. “I think we can probably arrange that” she mused softly before she stepped into the bathroom.

Lionel watched after her for a second before he climbed into bed, settling down against his pillow. Stretching out slightly, he allowed a soft yawn to tumble out of his mouth before the sound of movement reached his ears, something which caused him to pick his head up once more, his eyes settling on Camila who stood in the bathroom doorway, a soft tint of pink on her cheeks. “You need something?” he asked.

“Can I borrow a shirt?” Camila replied.

Lionel’s face lit up with a teasing smile. “You’re asking this time?” he quipped as he moved to collect a spare t-shirt from his dresser “That’s not like you” he added, offering the t-shirt out towards her.

Camila merely offered him a playful roll of her eyes before she took the shirt out of his hand, pulling it down over her head.

Lionel watched her a for a second, his dark eyes admiring her quietly, before he shook his head, a soft laugh tumbling out of his mouth.

Camila caught the soft sound of his laugh before she tilted her head, a faint smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. “What?” she prodded.

“It’s nothing” Lionel replied, shaking his head.

“You laughed” Camila countered “There must be a reason for that. Is something wrong with my outfit?” she pressed, a slightly confused look on her face.

Lionel didn’t hesitate in shaking his head. “No” he replied quickly “You look...well, you look beautiful, and it just took me back to the first time I saw you dressed like that. You’d been here maybe a couple of weeks, and you’d woken up early because you said you felt sick, and you were cooking breakfast and I...I can’t quite believe how long ago that was. We’ve nearly been a couple for a year, Mila, a year” he babbled softly, a soft blush quickly flooding his cheeks.

Camila looked up at him for a second, admiring the soft blush on his cheeks, before she gently reached her hand up, allowing her fingertips to pass over the reddened skin. “I know what you mean” she mused “This isn’t quite what I expected when I started staying here” she added, lightly pushing her fingers back through his hair.

Lionel leant into her hand slightly, closing his eyes. “That was the first time I saw your bump” he mumbled after a few moments of silence “That morning I was talking about, that was the first time that you showed me your baby bump. It’s kind of hard to believe that that little bump is now talking” he added quietly.

Camila, who’d been happily messing with a few strands of his dark hair, felt a smile spread across her face before she shook her head, mumbling quietly about how proud she was of Oscar. Lionel, who’d allowed his eyes to open, marveled at the soft smile that she wore for a couple of seconds before he gently leant forwards, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead. “You should be proud of him” he mumbled softly “I know I am” he added softly, his lips still delicately brushing against her skin.

Camila’s cheeks flushed a little at the feel of his lips against her skin before she shook her head, tilting it back slightly so that she could look up at him. “You know how much we both love you, right?” she babbled softly “I mean, I know I tell you a lot, but Oscar...he adores you too, Leo, and I want you to know that. I don’t think I can put into words how lucky we are to have you. He’s lucky to have a...a papa like you” she fussed timidly as she reached her hand up, trying to tuck a few loose hairs off of her face.

Lionel blinked a couple of times, allowing the words to hang in the air for a few long seconds, before he quirked a timid smile, his fingers gently replacing hers as he tucked her hair behind her ear. “You think so?” he mumbled softly.

Camila nodded. “Our children are going to be so lucky” she babbled out before she caught herself, her eyes widening.

Lionel quirked an eyebrow, trying to hide the slight grin which had almost immediately lit up his face. “Our children?” he asked, his voice caught between teasing and curious.

Camila spluttered for a few seconds, trying to come up with something to say, before she shook her head. “It...It’s something...eventually...I kind of...I kind of see us having one, maybe two” she spluttered out “I didn’t mean to just blurt it out like that. It’s been a long day and I just...” she trailed off, not quite knowing what else to add. It wasn’t something they’d talked about, despite them having been together for almost a year, the topic of a future was one which had yet to arise between them, and she was a little embarrassed that she had just blurted it out, even if Lionel did sport a small smile on his lips. It wasn’t quite how she’d envisaged broaching the topic.

Lionel stared down at her, just about refraining from letting out a small bashful laugh, before he lightly brushed his fingers over her cheek. “Two” he mumbled “After Oscar, two more” he added.

Camila tilted her head, but before she could say anything, Lionel leant into her, pressing a soft kiss against her lips. “We should get some sleep” he mumbled as he pulled away. Flashing her a quick smile, he mumbled a soft goodnight before he stepped away towards the bed, climbing beneath the covers. Camila watched him for a second, a little dumbstruck by his words, before she let out a quiet laugh to herself, a little amazed by how well things were going for them.
