Smoke

Twelve

She dumped the last box on to the kitchen side, smiling as a pair of arms snaked around her waist closely followed by delicate kisses on her neck,

“What do you want?”

She sighed happily, pulling things out as he attempted to keep hold of her as she moved to unpack,

“Nothing” he laughed “why do you always assume I want something?”

“Because you usually do!” she turned on the spot, “I’ve got a job for you anyway”

she purred running a finger along the collar of his t-shirt, his grip tightened as he pulled her closer, raising his eyebrows,

“Oh yeah? What’s that?”

“Grab some cash out of my purse and pop to the chippy! I’m starving!”

She laughed as he walked away sighing playfully,

“Fine what do you want?”

“Usual! And treat yourself my love!”

She laughed as he walked away, she continued unpacking, taking a few moments to savour her new surroundings, her new family home, albeit unconventional, the three of them on a small 2-bedroom houseboat but this was her new heaven, just her Kevin and Bayleigh.

He fingered his pocket nervously, he sat in the car waiting for the lights to change, chewing his cheek he began to think about the best way to go about this, “Just come out with it” he thought to himself as he rounded the last corner to home, she wasn’t the type for big romantic gestures, Kevin knew that,

She smiled to herself as keys clicked in the door, licking her lips at the thought of saveloy and chips,

“I’m not smelling salt and vinegar!”

She called out jovially, as she heard the door click shut,

“Sorry love it was shut, I did get you something else though”

She sighed turning to face him

“It had better be a diamond ring, to make up for the disappointment, I’m wasting away here!”

He smiled at her,

“Not quite diamond”

He said quietly rooting around in his pocket, hi stomach churned, too late to stop now, he took her hand in his slipping the ring on to her finger,

“Kev, what’s…what are you doing?”

“Making an honest woman of you” he smiled still looking at the ring on her hand, “If you’ll have me”

Unable to contain herself, she threw her arms around his neck,

“Of course I bloody will! I’ve put up with you for this long!”

He threw his head back letting out a sigh of relief,

“I thought you’d say no!”

Her eyebrows twitched in confusion as she cocked her head at him,

“Why would I have said no?”

“after” he paused choosing his next words carefully “Everything”

“I thought we put that behind us?”

He nodded not making eye contact

“yeah, we have” he shoved her jokingly “Now go and get your glad rags on, we’re going out for dinner”

They threw themselves in to work, taking as much over time as they could often only seeing each other in passing, as she took the day shift and he took the night, the most time they spent together in the year that followed was during their meetings with the wedding planner and the vicar, as much as she missed him she had to keep reminding herself it would all be worth it in the end.

They had become used to the rest of the crew crooning love songs at the every time they were spotted together, they laughed it off when Billy followed them singing the wedding march as loudly as he could, that was until he was collared by Georgiadis.

She had one job left on her list, with only a week to go before the ceremony she needed to get it done and quickly, she had mulled over how to ask, she had even lost sleep over it in the past couple of days, as soon as she knew he was alone, she made her move,

Bayleaf jumped as she slammed the kitchen door,

“Jesus Christ Scarlett! Whats the matter!”

“I’m glad you’re alone!”

She said quietly, he folded his arms and leaned on the worktop, his hip supporting his weight,

“Don’t tell me! Bayleigh is my namesake because I’m her father?”

She winced,

“Good god no!”

“Nice thank you!”

“You’re a great father!” she fiddled with her fingers for a moment thinking about how to word her next question, she looked down at her hands, “Which is exactly why I wanted to ask,” she paused feeling his eyes burning in to her waiting for her to say something, “Will you give me away?”

He froze, rooted to the spot, a smile spreading across his face,

“Well, yeah, of course I will” he spluttered holding his arms out for a cuddle, nuzzling in to her hair “Thank you for asking me Dolly!”

“I couldn’t think of anyone better”

She mumbled.

The night before the ceremony drew round, she felt her chest getting tight as she, picked her bag up from the bed, she turned slowly, trying to contain her excitement, she couldn’t stop smiling, catching sight of the suit bag hung on the wardrobe door,

“Bayleaf will be here for his suit at about seven tomorrow, make sure you’re awake!”

He rolled his eyes watching her from the door way,

“Of course I will be!”

“You better be! And please don’t turn up stinking of booze!” he laughed “I know George and Billy will be here and I know they like a drink!”

He took it as her panicking, grabbing hold of her and squeezing her,

“You need to calm down, I promise the house will still be afloat when we get back here tomorrow and I won’t be drunk and Bayleaf will get his suit! Now piss off, I’ve got a poker game to start!”

She had almost forgotten about George and Billy sat in their lounge, she glared at him marching out of the room and to the front door, smiling and giving a small wave to the two men sat at the table,

“Don’t worry Dolly we’ll be at the church for three!”

George shouted, trying not to laugh, she poked her head back round the door,

“ONE!”

She sat on the sofa at her mums, glass of wine in hand, not paying attention to the chick flick that played on the telly, she wiggled her engagement ring with her thumb, butterflies running rampant in her stomach, she chewed her cheek trying to keep a smile from her face, she wasn’t sure how she was going to sleep that night.
