Love Is a Battlefield

Chapter Seven: Take a Break

“You look like you could use a break,” Amelia said stepping into Gerard’s office, she was surprised to see him home when she was coming back for lunch with his mother; it had been another long morning of finalising things for the wedding.

Amelia was honestly astonished with how much Montserrat had managed to get done in such a short space; there was so much that needed to be done in such a short space of time.

Things had been rather busy since the engagement party and Amelia knew that it was only going to get worse as they got closer to the wedding.

Gerard blinked looking up from the paperwork that was in his hand, he hadn’t been expecting her back so soon from lunch; he had thought his mother had the entire day planned out for them.

Offering her a weak smile, he set down the paperwork and leant back in his chair to look at her; he was exhausted and the work load didn’t seem to be getting any lighter.

“I thought you were out with my mother,” Gerard mused watching her, he took off his glasses and set them on his desk while he was watching her closely.

He was pleased to see that she was handling every thing so well, he was sure that things could have been a little overwhelming and he was hopeful that it would prepare her for life after they were married.

Amelia nodded her head and moved to stand by his desk, her eyes catching on his work before she focused back on him; it all looked so official and she was sure it was important.

“I was, but she had a meeting at the hospital to get to,” Amelia replied softly, she wasn’t sure what to do with herself now that she was free for the afternoon.

She didn’t have anything to planned and she was a little relieved to be free from wedding planning ever just for the afternoon.

There was so much for them to do and Amelia was thankful that she didn’t have to do any of it alone; she wasn’t sure she would be able to handle it without Montserrat helping her.

Gerard nodded, he was proud of his mother and the work that she did at the hospital; she had worked hard and he knew that Montserrat had done everything in her power to make sure that her work mattered.

It was much preferred to what his father did for a living, his work was shameful and Gerard did his best to stay as far away from it as possible; it certainly didn’t help that he was meddling in his personal life.

“What are you going to do with your afternoon off?” Gerard asked doubting that she would get another afternoon like this before the wedding; she might as well make the most of it while she had the chance to do so.

He was spending most of his time in the run up to the wedding working and Gerard doubted that he would have to do much other than pick up his suit and turn up on the day.

His mother had assured him that she had everything in hand and that it would most certainly be the day that Amelia had dreaded of; there would be no stone left unturned while they were planning for their wedding.

“I’m not really sure,” Amelia said shaking her head, she was a little unsure of what she should do; she hadn’t put much thought into what she was going to do.

There was no telling when she would get another chance like this, she was sure that the wedding planning was only going to get more hectic from here.

The wedding invites had gone out and Montserrat had done her best to make sure that the wedding wasn’t too over the top; it was an event that would be followed as closely as any royal wedding.

Gerard stared at her for a moment before an idea came to him, he guessed it couldn’t hurt to take a break.

“You really didn’t have to do this, I am sure you have a lot of work to do,” Amelia said stepping into the ice cream parlour that he had brought her too; it was a beautiful day and it would have been a shame to be stuck at home.

She was a little surprised that he had wanted to do this when she was sure that his work was important; she doubted that he had much free time on his hands with his campaigning.

“It’s fine, it’s nice to get out of the house and relax,” Gerard reassured her, he had been stuck in his office all morning and it was nice to be able to take a break from his work.

His job was important and he wouldn’t change it for the world but there were times that he felt lie it was swallowing him whole while he was trying to figure out his next move.

The date for the election was set and Gerard couldn’t believe that he had a little under six months to try and win this campaign.

“What do you want?” Gerard offered deciding to treat her, spending time with his fiancée was meant to be a normal thing and they were going to be married in a little under a month’s time.

This could be their only chance to relax and get to know one another outside of their home, he was going to be working so much while she continued to plan their wedding.

“Mint Chocolate Chip,” Amelia said after a moment checking the menu, she wasn’t sure what to expect from him and she was flattered that he had wanted to bring her out like this.

They hadn’t been followed by any paparazzi and it was the first time that they had been out together without having to attend some gathering with anyone else.

It was almost like a date and it reminded Amelia of what it had been like when they had been teenagers; she had never thought that they would be able to do anything like this.

Gerard quickly nodded his head and ordered for them, he looked so casual instead of being dressed in a suit like she normally saw him in.

“I can’t remember the last time that we did something like this,” Amelia admitted once they had been served and had found a table to sit at; she couldn’t imagine that they would get this chance again.

Gerard nodded his head, he guessed that they hadn’t been able to do much while in school and he knew that there was a part of him that regretted that they hadn’t been able to really date before their engagement.

Things had never worked out like he had hoped and Gerard couldn’t remember the last time he had felt so at peace; he didn’t want to think that far back knowing the true answer.

“How has the campaign trail been?” Amelia asked knowing that soon she would be thrown head first into this situation; she was going to have to deal with it sooner or later.

It was strange to think that she would play the role of a politician's wife, she was going to be in the spotlight just as much as he was once, they were married.

“I don’t want to talk about work,” Gerard insisted with a shake of his head, he would have to deal with that when he got back home but for now, he wanted to focus on her.

Things weren’t always going to be this calm and he truly hoped that Amelia was prepared for that; it wasn’t a life that anyone should find themselves unprepared for.

“Tell me what you’ve been up to the last couple of years,” Gerard said wanting to hear it from her and not anyone else, he wanted to know everything that he could about her from her.

Amelia nibbled on her ice cream, she eyed him surprised that he wanted to know; she was sure that his father could tell him anything that he wanted to know.

It was strange to think that they were going to be married but she guessed it couldn’t hurt to talk about her former life.
