Kate's Big Break

This is my first "novel" so I really need critique on how to write a novel. I've only ever written short stories and I'm afraid that I'm writing this too much like a short story and I won't be able to evolve it into a novel. I have no problem taking critique. I would love to hear what you think of my story, good or bad. I would also love to hear any tips you have on writing a novel for the first time and especially writing the first chapter.
