Chapter 5
(Next day)
I woke up early in the morning to do my makeup and paint my nails. I slipped on skin tight leggings and a long sleeved black shirt that slanted down my shoulder. I also put on a hat like Ryan’s but mine was black with black sequins on them. I sprayed myself with perfume and looked in the mirror.. I’ve never gotten so dressed up for a boy before....what’s going on with me...what are you doing to me Ryan Evans..
(Later in first period)
So Ryan went home after 9 and now I’m back In Ms darbus’ class.
“Just something for you” Sharpay said handing darbus a gift and walking away. I rolled my eyes
~kiss up~ I looked over to Ryan and he smiled and waved. I blushed and smiled waving back. He’s so sweet..and cute.. and funny...
“Well I assume we all learned our home room manners yesterday people? Correct? If not we have some dressing rooms that need painting. Now a few announcements. This morning during your free period will be your chance to audition for the musical. Both single and pairs” Sharpay looked back at Ryan excitedly. He gave her a smile and as soon as she turned he rolled his and and looked at me. Ryan and I looked at each other. He winked at me making me smile with butterflies in my stomach. I looked down at my hands in my lap blushing.
“Now I will be in the auditorium until noon for those of you bold enough to extend the wingspan of your creative spirit” ms darbus said stretching her arms out. I rolled my eyes trying to keep from laughing.
(Later during free period) it took all the courage I had to even bring myself to the auditorium and when I got to the door way
I found Troy hiding behind the janitor bucket
“I don’t think Gabriella is in there” I whispered next to him making him jump
“I-I know...what are you doing here? You’re not sure about singing either?” Troy asked scratching her head.
“Oh most definitely don’t want to...but I promised Ryan I’d at least try out” I said sighing.
“Well I’m gonna keep hiding here for a while longer” Troy said
“Why not just go sit in the back row” I said and walked to the back row hunching down in my seat. There were a lot of bad ones in the auditions.. Ryan looked back and saw me and waved. I ducked down trying to hide so Sharpay wouldn’t see me. When I poked my head back up he was turned back to the stage again.
“And it seems we only have one sign up for the couple Minnie and Arnold and that’s Sharpay and Ryan Evans. Please let’s show everybody why we gather in this hallowed hall” ms darbus said as Gabriella sat down next to Troy and I
“You’re scared too?” I whispered
“Yeah but I didn’t sign up I’m not sure if I’m going to sing yet” Gabs said
“Me either” I said biting my lip nervously. Sharpay pushed her brother back so she could walk to the stage first. I rolled my eyes and observed. The curtains closed and someone pushed up a stereo.
“Oh this has drama written all over it” I said smirking. The music began to play and all we saw their hands snapping from the curtain. The curtain opened and Ryan and Sharpay grabbed their mics to sing. The song was supposed to be a slow song and romantic but they had someone do the piano for them and sped up the tempo making it a upbeat romantic song..I didn’t like it..but I had a feeling Ryan didn’t ever get much say in what they do for production.
As they were singing Sharpay gave Ryan her mic and began to dance.
I looked at Troy and gabs and they looked as horrified as I did. They finally finished and everybody but the three of us clapped
“Any more sign ups?”ms darbus asked looking around
“We should go” Troy whispered. Ryan looked directly at me as Sharpay left. I shook my head as Troy gabs and I went to the door and looked back.
Ryan mouthed come on to me but I got up and ran to the door.
“Anybody?No? Good!Done” ms darbus said turning off her light.
As ms darbus started walking away gabs turned on her heel and ran back in.
“I’d like to audition ms darbus” she said. Troys and my jaw dropped as we stared at her in shock.
“Time means something in the world of theatre young lady the single auditions are long long over and there are simply no other pairs” ms darbus said.
“I’ll sing with her” I looked over and Troy looked defeated. My jaw dropped
“Don’t do it!” I whispered but he walked passed me
“Troy Bolton? Where is your sports possey or whatever they’re called” ma darbus said
“team” Troy corrected
“Ah” ms darbus said with disinterest.
“But I’m here alone... actually I’m here to sing with her” Troy said shyly.
“Yes well we take these things very seriously here at east high. I called for auditions and you didn’t say anything. Free period is now over” ms darbus said.
“Wait!if you let them sing I’ll.. I’ll sing with Ryan so atleast you have some options when you choose the pair! She had an amazing voice ms darbus!” I came out from the corner. Ryan saw me and smiled
“Ryan!” Sharpay called her twin. He rolled his eyes and walked off stage. I felt my heart sink
“Perhaps the next musical” ms darbus said and walked off
“I’m sorry gabs” I said hugging her
Suddenly the girl at the piano tripped and fell. We ran over to help her pick up her papers
“Are you okay?” I asked as Troy, Gabriella and I helped her pick them up
“So you’re a composer?” The girl just looked at him
“You wrote the song Ryan and Sharpay sang? And the entire show?” Troy asked and she just nodded.
“That’s really cool. I can’t wait to hear the rest of it”Troy said helping her up.
“So why are you so afraid of ryan and Sharpay? It is your show” Troy said
“It is?” She asked
“Well I mean isn’t the composer kind of like the play maker in basketball?” Troy asked but she looked confused
“Playmaker?”she questioned
“You know the one who makes everyone else look good. I mean without you there’s no show. You’re the playmaker Kelsey” Troy said smiling.
“I am?” She asked smiling
We all nodded and smiled back
“Do you wanna hear how the duet is supposed to sound?” Kelsey asked and we all nodded. She walked to the piano and set her music sheets down and began to play the song slow. Not fast like how Sharpay wanted it.
Troy picked up the lyric sheet and looked at it before he began to sing the song in a slower pace. Soon Gabriella was joining him. I smiled as they sang and when they finished I clapped
“Wow that’s nice” Troy said
“Bolton! Montez! You have a call back! Kelsey give them the song from the second act. Work on it with them” ms darbus said and Kelsey smiled excitedly
“What happened with Ryan?” Gabriella asked. I sighed
“Who knows. Sharpay called for him and that’s the last I seen of him” I said sadly
“I’m so sorry about that. I managed to ditch her. Come on before it’s too late” Ryan said walking up the stage.
“What do you mean before? It is too late.. we could of sang but-“I said crossing my arms
“But nothing unless you come with me” Ryan said taking my hand. I sighed
“Good luck!” Gabriella and Troy called.
“Thanks!” I said and let him drag me waving to gabs and Troy as they practiced the other song.
