Burn Us Down

86: I Said The Same Thing About Him

Gently brushing the tips of her fingers though Gerard’s messy hair, Olivia quirked a sleepy smile, snuggling a little closer to her pillow. She’d been awake for a while. Even with the twins having spent the night with her father and step mother, she had woken up as early as she would with the two of them around, but she knew that there was no hurry for her to get up, something which had led to her just lying there, watching Gerard in his sleep. The previous few days had been a whirlwind. Olivia and Gerard had spent a lot of time swept up in final preparations for the wedding, and it’d meant that time alone together had been at a premium, something Olivia planned to change now that the wedding was out of the way. They had a little while to themselves. Alex, Valeria and Gerard’s parents had all been quick to offer their babysitting services so that Olivia and Gerard could take a few days for just the two of them, and Olivia couldn’t wait for it.

Placing a hand over Gerard’s cheek, she gently traced her thumb along the line of his jaw before she leant forwards, kissing his forehead softly. She held the kiss for a moment, smiling gently against his skin, before she tried to move back, only to be stopped when Gerard’s arm tightened around her waist, keeping her close to him. Breathing out a soft laugh, she squirmed a little before she shook her head. “I didn’t mean to wake you” she said softly.

Gerard just stared at her, his eyes soft and sleepy.

Olivia’s thumb brushed his jaw again. “Go back to sleep” she said “We’ve got time” she added.

Gerard blinked a couple of times, allowing of a moment of quiet to pass between the two of them, before a slow smile spread over his face. “You’re my wife” he announced sleepily.

Olivia grinned up at him before she nodded. “I am” she confirmed “And you’re my husband” she added.

“I knew that I’d like hearing you say that” Gerard mused “Can you say it for me again?” he prodded.

Olivia rolled her eyes, but it didn’t dim her smile. “My husband” she cooed.

Gerard turned his head slightly, pressing a kiss against Olivia’s hand which had rested on his cheek, before he turned back to look at her. “You said we have time?” he asked.

“It’s still really early” Olivia replied “I’m only awake because I normally would be with the twins. We’ve got at least another hour before we need to get downstairs for breakfast” she added.

Gerard nodded his head slowly, the pad of his thumb tracing circles against her hip. “Are your bags packed?” he asked.

“They are” Olivia confirmed “Why?” she asked, offering him an innocent smile.

Gerard offered her a meaningful look, something Olivia feigned confusion at for a moment before she allowed her face to clear. “Oh” she teased.

Gerard shook his head, just marvelling at her for a moment, before he leant over her, pressing his lips to hers.

“We could catch them in the lobby” Gerard announced, stuffing his foot into his shoe.

Olivia continued to brush her hair, shaking her head amusedly. “We have to go and say goodbye to them” she replied “They’re flying back to Barcelona, and they’re taking the girls with them. Do you really want to leave without cuddles?” she prodded, sparing him a look via the mirror which stood ahead of her.

Gerard met her eyes before he shook his head, letting out a little sigh. “You’re right” he replied.

“I often am” Olivia replied, poking her tongue out at him impishly.

Gerard rolled his eyes playfully, but whatever comment he had prepared to fire back at her fell quiet when the sound of knocking filled the room around them. Letting out a quiet sigh, he pushed himself up from the bed before he wandered through the suite, pulling the door open.

Melissa, who stood in the corridor outside, looked up at the sound of the door opening, her eyes widening when they met Gerard’s.

Gerard quirked a sharp smirk. “You’ve got to be kidding me” he mumbled.

“I…I just want to talk to Oli” Melissa stumbled out.

“You don’t think you’ve done enough damage?” Gerard replied curtly.

“Don’t do that” Gerard’s interruption was sharp “Don’t act like I am being irrational or unreasonable. I was clear with you, Melissa. I told you that if you were going to come, it had to be without Nicolas, and you still brought him anyway. You almost ruined one of the most important days in your sister’s life, and you don’t get to pretend that you didn’t” he added, trying, and failing, to calm the tone of his voice down. He didn’t want to yell, he knew that it would do little to help the situation, but he hated how close Melissa had come to ruining a day that meant so much to him and Olivia.

Melissa shifted her feet, her eyes fixed on the floor. “I’m sorry” she whispered.

Gerard scoffed, but his opportunity to reply was curtailed when he felt a hand on his back, gently coaxing him out of the doorway. Blinking a couple of times, he turned to offer Olivia a look, something she replied to with a small, tired smile. “Go on ahead” she said gently “I’ll be with you shortly” she added.

Gerard shook his head. “Livy…”

“Please, Gerard” Olivia cut him off “Go down. I’ll follow you” she insisted.

Gerard opened and closed his mouth a couple of times, wanting nothing more than to object, but the pleading look that Olivia threw at him stopped him. Huffing out a sigh, he pressed a tender kiss to her cheek before he shuffled down the corridor, stopping only to offer a sharp look at Melissa before he disappeared into the elevator. The two sisters watched the doors slide closed before they turned look at one another.

Olivia spoke first. “Why are you here?” she asked quietly.

“I wanted to talk to you before you left” Melissa replied “Yesterday was…me and Nico wanted to…to apologise” she added.

Olivia shook her head, smiling ruefully down at her feet. “He’s not here, Mel” she pointed out “Because he’s not sorry. He liked stirring stuff up. He liked that Enzo wanted to punch him, that Gerard would have done too if he’d been given the chance. He likes having the attention on him” she pointed out.

Melissa sighed. She couldn’t refute it even if she wanted to.

“If you love him, you love him” Olivia continued “I’ll never make you apologise for being with someone who makes you happy, Mel, but you have to see this from my point of view too. He ruined your marriage and in doing that, he hurt a guy I’ve come to adore like my older brother. He’s made more than one attempt to wind up my husband over a kiss that he and I shared an eternity ago. I know you love him, Mel, but even you have to understand why we wouldn’t want him here and what you bringing him showed me. It’s not something an apology you’ve repeated a hundred times is likely to fix. I’m sorry, but I can’t keep doing this with you” she added, her voice as even and as flat as she could make it.

She was tired of fighting. She and Melissa had gone around and around in the same circle and she didn’t want to keep doing it. Melissa would always side with Nicolas, her bringing him to the wedding had showed Olivia that, and she knew that trying to change it was futile. Melissa had let Nicolas ruin her marriage twice, she couldn’t hesitate on siding with him over her sister.

Melissa sniffed. “I knew he kissed you” she said “He told me the first night you and Gerard came over” she added.

Olivia just nodded her head, crossing her arms over chest.

“I wish you could see what I see in him” Melissa continued “He’s not as bad as you think” she added.

Olivia’s lips quirked upwards into a bitter smile. “I told you the same thing about Gerard” she replied “And look how that worked out. I’m going to go downstairs now, Mel. I’ll see you when I see you” she added before she pulled the suite door shut, making her way towards the elevator without a look back.
